Quote: Thanks for the photos. My blue adult roos are consistantly the same over their bodies and darker on the neck and hackles. Most of my 2-3 month olds are starting the same as the former roos. But I have two, 3-4 week-olds that are different are showing the different color on the wings...

Sugar Sand, they are quite lovely, but most of my boys are solid except for neck and hackles, being the same color, the tail and wings are the same in color as the rest of the body. Yours is beautiful but different, maybe I will get one or two that will look more like yours with the darker wings...

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy wrote: This is my first Blue JG. It does kinda look weird doesn't it? Is that a Good thing or a Bad thing? Hunterland replied: My other blues have even tone bodies (medium or light blue) with very dark blue or black heads. So this is my first experience with the uneven...

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy : Quote: Thanks! I'm alittle worried that the Splash JG is a roo, and that the black Chick isn't going to turn out good. I guess only time will tell! I think you are right the splash is a roo. Let me ask about your blue. I noticed he has irregular blue tones on the wings...

typical box size for a chiken is 12 x 12, but I noticed that my giants like my 18 x 12 better and my 24 x 24 goose nest better. The 12 x 12 gets squooshed into by two hens on occasion and end up with broken eggs if one is trying to go broody. I have mine less than 2 feet off the ground as is...

Quote: I am sorry about your hen. It is tough to take all the losses we animal lovers have to endure. Even if she wasn't one of your favorites, it would still tough to take the loss. Do you dissect your animals. I do; that gives me a better view of what was going on yet sometimes that...

Quote: Your hens are nice looking hens, I can see they have recently gorged themselves, yet I did not recognize them to be jersey giants. I was thinking that they might be a cross or the photo was a response to a previous posting about different breeds being discussed. More specifically...

Quote: Serious breeders would never keep anything other than what the SOP calls for. That would be yellow on the bottom of the feet. A response to both of your postings. The lav chicks that you have spoken of have a good reputation. I think it is a solid plan on the crosses you have...

Quote: I'm thinking Shadow (black) and Apollo (splash) I always look at my unnamed chickens one day and a name pops into my head and that's what they are. I like those names, I am just now trying to figure out name for my keepers so I can get them put in my breeding records and keep track of...

Quote: Kathyinno, I am sorry to have added to confusion, so let me make this simpler. An allele is a chain-looking set of amino acids (C, G, A, and T) of DNA material that every living organism possesses, including us. Each gene has two interconnected alleles that resemble a step ladder when...

Quote: You have a very good point about the consistency of the expression, but the LAV, 3 codons are on gene 7. If our diluted blue splashes look lavender, but are on different genes or affect different codons, by the science world we cannot call it lavender. We might have to call it the...

Quote: That is what I was thinking. I am learning a little at a time. The one thing I have gathered is that the Lav gene has to be introduced, and it does not come from the Blue/Black/Splash birds. The LAV gene is an albino-type mutation; the wild type (LAV*N/LAV*N) and lavender (LAV*L/LAV*L)...

Anyone interested in the color Lavender: I continue to learn everyday, so this is what I have learned over the past couple of days: Blue Jersey Giants come in blacks (BB), blues (Bb), and splashes (bb). Most of you already knew that though. What no one has been able to tell me and with much...
