Hi there! Where about in the Catskills?? I'd love to stay in touch...I'd Love to have a Lavendar Orpington!!! Also-- interested in a Blue Cochin rooster....I'm in Delaware County near Walton / Sidney / Oneonta area
Welcome!!!
ugh-- well maybe Im just going to have to put them in the run during the day & bring them in at night into a brooder for 2-3 weeks.
I do have a heat lamp in the coop, but the adult hen would probably be overheated if I did that..I don't have separate coops, just one & the hen free ranges.
Im going to make this short & sweet. I have 1 hen left (around 6 years old). Her buddy hen died last week & now shes all alone. I ordered 10 four week old chicks.
Do you think I need a big integration/ separation thing going or is it probably not going to be a big issue integrating a bunch of...
Charlottem, You can buy one from Tractor Supply if you really need to.
You can ask a local building supply store if they can recommend anybody who may be able to help you, but that would probably be more expensive.
Where are you in NY?
Usually takes a couple of weeks for them to molt to a month or 2.
I just dont recall this happening last year in the coldest month of the year.....
And yes, they are not that friendly during the molting process....
Oh well, lots of warm oatmeal coming their way........
All of a sudden, I have 3 chickens seriously molting during the coldest part of winter....what the heck?
The others started in October, and are done.
Man I feel bad, especially for my beloved Buff Orpington, poor thing looks like a wreck. And its cold,.... and snowing.
Anyone else going...
This is pretty much what I was thinking......I almost bust a gut----- someone in FL using heat lamp???
My chickens are doing fine with no heat here in the Northeast. I wouldnt say they love it, but they are well fed, sheltered and watered properly.
This is my coop-
Welcome to...........

It was made by my good man, Jim. Love you honey!!!
The coop is 6 x 6. It is made from wood milled locally by my neighbor across the road.. (thanks Mark). It is raised off the floor and has an enclosed run...

Excellent information here folks, thank you
I feel bad now about picking her up, but I wanted to get my hands on her to make sure nothing was wrong with her physcially (injuries, etc) But man, she was absolutely FREAKED out which is totally unlike her. I mean screeching like I lit her on fire...
Yes, they will lay better with increased lighting hours and you can start now.
However, you will be messing with the natural rhythm of life.
If you add lighting now, they will cease to lay earlier in life as I understand it.
Always a personal choice.
I'm convinced Buff Orpingtons are the best chickens ever.
I do like my Golden Comet though too- shes a tough little one, and laid all winter. Hardy little girl
OK, my barred rock is molting pretty bad. Looks terrible.
But the worst part is, as soon as she started molting, her behavior totally changed. She is like a wild woman- crazy skittish and when I CAN corner her and pick her up- shes SCREAMING for her LIFE!!
Now, mind you, this chicken used to...
