So one of our silkies wasn't growing, and we discovered she was having trouble walking, so we've hobbled her legs with vet tape (about 2 weeks ago) and she seems to be doing a lot better...she's eating and drinking...and although she's still the size of a 3 week old chick instead of 5 week old...
So my 9 year old was being a great farm kid and was feeding the chickens some yummy bugs... unfortunately he had picked up those "bugs" wasps...from a nest in another part of the yard that my husband had sprayed the night before....
Anything i can do to mitigate effects, i dont know how many...
My 11 month old SL Wyandotte had a weird growth growing from right beneath her face that seemed to come out of nowhere (out the side covered in feathers, was not there a week ago), and we isolated her overnight and spent the day today cleaning and sanitizing the coop, the internet seems like...
Help one of my buffs is not looking so good, this happened since yesterday! Other chickens were packing at her too, is this pecking order stuff? Should I try and wash her up? Should I stick her back with the others or keep her out somehow? They have pleanty of space theres multiple feeders and...

We got chicks this year and are using a existing coop on our property from previous owners, as time goes on we are finding more and more reasons to dislike it. Its got pleanty of space (as it takes up a huge area) but that's about all it's got going for it.... hubby wants to build a new coop...
So it gets dark here late right now like 10pm, and we live on a mountain with pleanty of dusk predators so I've been putting the chickens (7weeks today) to bed in thier coop around 8/830 with food and fresh water... the last 2 nights they have been super squacky and literally throwing themselves...
Overnight temps have been in the 40s (8c) the last week or so so we have been turning the heat lamp on in the coop for our 6.5 week olds. They are feathered. This next week it's supposed to be 55-60f overnight... am I safe to turn off the extra heat??? Its hitting the 80s in the daytime.
We starter our chicks on medicated starter, but the feed store is having issues with thier supplier and is out of medicated and likely wont get more. I have 6 week old chicks who we moved outside a week and a half ago. Now I got unmedicated starter but have about 1/4 of a bag of medicated left...
Chicks are 6 weeks old! We have been feeding them several times a day keeping thier feed dish full for the most part, however I'm realizing I have no idea how much food they should have, how long they can go between eating if we are out/sleeping, either now or when grown; and also now that they...
When can you more reliably take a guess at breeds. We think we have figured out 2 (bigger more distinctions) cochens out of our 10, 4 week old chicks but the other 8 I keep thinking are something then see a picture of something else it could be etc. Do I need to wait until they are older or is...
Hey everyone we have 4 week old chicks brooding in our bathtub but we are going to be away from the house all day tomorrow. Probably 10+ hours. What I'm concerned about is thier water, they tend to poop in it (expected) but then they dont seem drink out of it once theres poop (I dont blame...
Hey everyone I couldn't find a BC or Okanagan specific thread and being in Canadas only desert presents unique situations to the rest of Canada.
What is everyone doing for the heat?
Do you do anything special to help your chickens when its smokey?
Where in the Okanagan are you?
We have 4 week old chicks and just started taking them out to thier future home, we live in a desert and it's likely to be hot this summer. Already 35cecius today. Anyways wondering what people do with chickens in hot places, they do have shade but it's still awfully hot out there! At least the...
So I have 10 mixed layers chicks that are just over 2 weeks old, no idea what they are but am particularly curious about my 2"big ones". Firstly anyone able to help me figure out what breed? They are larger than the others and have fluffy hairy legs. And secondly...one of the two started...
Hey all,
We moved from the city to 3 acres of land 1 year ago. We are eating our way into farm life, first we got a dog and this year we got Chickens! I have to admit I know very little about chickens and buying "mixed layers" at the feed store dont even know what kind of chicks we have...
