    Neutering a Rouen drake

My wife and I bought two ducklings late in May. They both were supposed to be Mallard hen ducklings. Now that they are about three months old it has become clear to us that one of them is a drake. Possibly a Rouen. He is a large duck with similar markings of a Mallard, just getting his green...

    Coop floor

The floor in my coop was OSB board. I had to remove 1/2 the floor as I have 3 ducks living with my chickens and they are messy drinkers, and the floor got very wet and started to break through. I have considered a number of options, paint, vinyl etc. I also thought of using paving bricks for...

Scruffy looking hens and poopy butts!

If the poop is white and sticky it may mean something serious. If she appears lethargic with droopy wings and tail, comb pale or turning blue, and she is seperating herself from the flock she is definitely ill. I just had one of my hens die from a possible respritory illness. She also had...

    Mallard & Rouen ducks

We have a young Mallard and Rouen hen. One of each. They look full grown but they are only about three months old. At what age can I start feeding them Layena. They live with my chickens and an older Mallard hen. I have been feeding them all Flock Raiser because I didn't want the young...

Has anyone used shredded corn cobs for litter on the coop floor? How did it work? Does it compost well?

    New coop floor

Thanks, I was thinking of using vinyl flooring or tiles. I found another chicken web site that suggested linoleum or marmoleum. Both are actually green products and last alot longer than vinyl flooring or tiles.

    New coop floor

I have to replace my coop floor and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what type of wood or other material to use. The coop is a shed I converted to a coop and it has a pressed wood floor now. The area under the waterer has gotten very weak due to messy drinkers. Thanks in advance for...

Hen with spurs? Blood spot on shells and yoke.

I have a Welsumer chicken by the name of McNugget. McNugget has spurs on her/his legs. Do hens grow spurs or is she a rooster in disguise? McNugget never crows. She/he was almost killed when she/he was hatched 1 1/2 years ago, by the hen that hatched her/him. My daughter saved McNugget and...

Has anyone fed their chickens quinuoa?

Has anyone fed their chickens quinuoa? I was reading about how nutritious it is and thought it would be something good to supplement the layer mash I feed them.

    Egg laying

I have one 2 1/2 year old white Leghorn hen who lays egg every day. I have five 1 1/2 Welsumer hens who have not laid an egg in at least a month. They are all healthy and they all eat the same feed. Plenty of water. They also get to free range in the yard and get scratch grains as a treat...

    Hen is staggering while walking.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Welsummer hen who started staggering when she walks last Thurs. She is also in a heavy molt. I took her to the vet on Fri. and she stayed overnight. No blood tests were done, just a general check up and a fecal exam. She is healthy, eating and drinking, no parasites...

Hen walks like she is drunk.

I have a hen, Faith, a Welsummer, (sp?) who started staggering around when she walks. She also squats low to the floor and walks that way also. She and another hen, McNugget, also a Welsummer, have been molting a lot lately. My other three Welsummers are fine except none of them have been...

    Fly control

What would you all recommend for fly control in our coop and run? I just read about diatomaceous earth. Would lye work or would that harm the hens and chicks? Right now I have a thick layer of straw on the floor of the coop and the hens have kicked a lot of straw into the run. David dao1947

    Possible rejected chick

We got eight fertilized eggs for our broody hen, Francine, to sit on hoping at least some would hatch. Of course all eight hatched Friday. For some reason Francine was pecking the one chick and injured it's back. We sperated the chick by putting it in a bird cage with food and water and left...
