My sweet little silver laced Wyandotte, Maudie, died this way just this morning. Except no lash egg. I’m devastated. I’m a first time chicken keeper - got my four as 2 day olds last April. My other 3 are looking for her and are not going in the coop doorway where she died. It’s awful 😞
She’s at top of pecking order. I’ve got 3 other hens. They are all the same age. Before the Calicostopped laying my Wyandotte stopped - did all the egg bound check on her too, baths. actually took her to the vet did fecal float test , all was clear. Not long after vet check the Wyandotte...
My just over a year old Calico Princess hasn’t laid in almost 3 months, and it has coincided with bad looking tail feathers. Please see photos attached - she hasn’t lost any feathers Checked for egg bound months ago when this first began . No visible worms in poop, comb and wattles nice bright...
My just over a year old Calico Princess hasn’t laid in almost 3 months, and it has coincided with bad looking tail feathers. Please see photos attached - she hasn’t lost any whole feathers - just the barbs from the shaft of now about three or so tail feathers. Checked for egg bound months ago...
Just noticed this morning my 10 month old Wyandotte has suddenly lost feathers in the same spot as well. I posted my very first question here about her a month and a half ago re: she stopped laying. She still isn’t laying, and a trip to vet for a bit of diarrhea (short course antibiotic...
25chickens - doing the same thing and was wondering too how long to wait before using. I’m still learning but I do know that you can make safe compost in cold , it just takes longer. I’d say 4-5 months is long enough?
Well - my girl Maudie is still on a laying break. We've taken her to the vet because she did have diarrhea (whitish, sticking to her booty feathers)- all vitals good, fecal float test negative for parasites - so the vet gave us a short course of antibiotic. That stopped the diarrhea. And
She...
I’m sorry. I did read through the thread - I guess I missed that. Sorry to have asked - like I said I’m a beginner learning here, so I ask questions to learn. Not trying to be accusatory. Hope you get it figured out soon
Yes I plan on doing that in their rotating yard areas but in their enclosed run - where they stay when I’m not home, I have layers of pine straw and no mud problem. It’s so fresh and clean
You are in FL? You must do pine straw :) easily available for us in the south . I have in on my run floor and live it! It is clean, it smells nice, it drains perfectly, it breaks down nicely to had to compost heap and most especially my chickens love scratching through it.
Could the feed have gotten moldy? Or maybe the scratch grains? Or is it because there hasn’t been enough dry loose soil for a good dust bath to keep things clean down there (not sure where you are in AL but here in TN it’s been so wet this winter)? I had been keeping my feed outside in one of...
Since we already bought the pre made runs and had two attached to the coop, the handy man built the roof as free standing, with enough room if we ever decided to take the runs down and redo to fit in to what he built. He said would not be stable enough to add roof to the runs directly (it is one...
I use pine straw in my run and love it. My chickas love it too. They always get so excited when I add a new layer. I’ve never had an odor problem. But then again I periodically scoop up poop and add to compost heap. I only have four so pretty easy to keep up
I had a metal roof added over my runs - I can attach a photo to show you how the handy man did it if you are interested. Also - I have been using pine straw on their run floor to help with the mud. My chickas love it and it feels so clean to me.
Middle TN - on the highland rim with more acidic soil. I would just like to prevent it from eroding. If it is hard to get anything to grow in those conditions then would clover be the best bet? What is growing now - not sure. Their coop, run and yard areas are at edge of pasture where the woods...
