Ok, so my grandkids are coming to visit in 3 weeks from tomorrow. They just saw me today and asked me to set some eggs so they can play with new chicks when they come for the weekend. So being the nice grandma that I am, I agreed. I have people that wants chicks if I don't want to keep them so...
I have just a young pullet and rooster born in May. I have a small coop, with some hay in it. I do close them up at night. I was debating on putting them in my big coop with my other chickens and one rooster but am concerned with them getting picked on.
Thanks for all the ideas. I will have to find one of those old feeders. I plan to use this mill because of the costs savings. I live two blocks from a local co-op but the williness of this other mill to bring bags of feed to my area for no delivery fee if I just go to a nearby farm where they...
I am going to start buying my layer feed from an elevator the grinds their own feed. It is a mash. I used it one other time and found I like it best best mixed with some water but they did tell me that people feed it dry too. How do you keep it from blowing away if you feed that dry?
I think it was the flavor. We are butchering the extra roos from when I hatch at about 4 to 5 months. Now we have had a hot miserable summer and I don't know if they just didn't put on the weight or what. We were so surprised at how small they were once we got all the feathers off them. Now the...
I really was hoping not to do the cornish cross again but I am so far not happy with the flavor of my dual purpose birds. I purposely chose to breed and raise Delawares but we are just not happy with the flavor.
Don't get me wrong, I love Delawares and most likely will continue to raise them...
I have the Delaware now. I do like them. I would like a little better quality than what I have. I have several different breeds and he wants me to scale down due to the rising cost of feed and having to maintain the different pens.
Well my boyfriend has told me I can only have one breed of rooster. He really would like me to get to one breed period. I have to have a good dual purpose bird. He likes a white feathered bird for purposes of butchering. So I guess for now I am going with the Delaware. I do like the breed but I...
Delaware are a large dual purpose bird so these were a nice sized bird. I think my orginal Dels came from Cackle hatchery but that has been last year. These were some I hatched in my incubator from my original birds.
These roosters were very tender, I don't know if you relax your meat before freezing but it really does help. What you said makes a lot of sense about the flavor of the birds. I can't free range my birds but they do get a varied diet. I feed them grass that I pull and dump in their pens, they...
I guess it is great to stock up if you can but the problem with that is if you don't have a good storage area you chance that feed molding on you and that can kill a chicken.
