Hello there!
Our house came with an un-used shed in the back corner of our yard. I never wanted to even open it, convinced some sort of rat or snake would lunge out at me! Finally decided to make some good use of it and build a coop for fresh eggs and for the ambiance they provide to the yard...
I had 4 chickens and the Texas summer killed two of them. My other two started molting soon after. They are finished molting and it's been almost three months with no eggs!!!
Is this normal? Are they broken? They are two years old.
We have seen a couple of mice around the coop. There is no...
I am down half my flock! I only started with 4, but still. They are just dead in the coop, both times.
I live in Austin, over 100 degrees every day for a couple months now and not a drop of rain since April. Is the heat killing my girls or could it be something else??
Since the first one died...
they get organic feed, and kitchen scraps. they haven't been let out to free range in awhile in my backyard, maybe its time for more of that. and I am due to mow so I''ll give them a pile of grass to mess with.
thank you!
My guess is the yolk makes the chick and these all come out roughly the same size...the difference in egg size is breed, and some breeds might use more of the whites to grow.
bump!
anyone have any solutions besides get rid of the wyandotte? I fear that won't work now as the other pecked chicken is also pecking at the Americauna.
One of my chickens, a gold laced wyandotte, started pecking two others. She has pecked bald spots onto their backs just above their tail feathers! Now one of those chickens is also pecking the other. My beautiful Americauna is really getting picked on now!
I have 4 chickens total. There is no...
i! I have 4 chickens about 7mths old. My chickens don't use any of their roosts and they don't lay in their nest box so I know they're kind of weird.
Well the other day we saw an egg in the run. It was sort of hard to get to so we closed the chickens up in the coop and thought to get the egg...

My chickens have just started laying and I think only 2 of the 4 are so far. We are finding the eggs in the middle of their run area, and today I found one in the coop by their waterer. We have an cheap litter box that was bought new for the next box and its got wood chips in it.
Any reason...
Good call, speckledhen! Just went out to feel her - and that lump is ALL feathers! I didn't know EE had beards, I never wouldve guessed. Thanks!
Now I know what she is, and that she's okay. Yippee!
I was just posting on the "diseases" board to find out what this is on my chicken. I thought she was some sort of barred rock. Turns out it looks like she is mixed with an EE and this is a beard!! LOL I was about to take her to the chicken doctor tomorrow, but just went out to feel it and its...
I just went out and picked her up, and it felt like it was all just FEATHERS. Is this possible, what the heck?! So, is there some sort of breed that has feathers right there? So weird. Glad she doesnt have a giant mass growing there, though!
She is the most scaredy-cat chicken ever, I can never get close to her. I always thought it was a lump but will make an effort to catch her to feel it to see if its just a beard. Thanks!
We got her from a farmer, thinking she was a silver laced wyandotte. Well she's clearly not that but - what is she?!
Also, is that lump on her neck normal for her breed?
Thanks!
My chicken has a lump in her neck, like around her throat.
She has had it for about 4 of her 6 months so I thought it was a breed thing. A farmer friend gave her to me and I have no idea what breed she is, but I thought it was normal for her.
The last 3 days it seems much bigger and she...
