What could be causing this feather loss??

I’m not sure that could be the cause because their feeding hasn’t changed since we’ve had them so I don’t know how or why that would suddenly cause them to peck out their feathers (and in the exact same place… that’s what’s the most odd). Also when I say treats it’s just veggies (similar to when...

What could be causing this feather loss??

Chicken feed ( they've been on it since laying), then a bunch of chicken scraps, meal worms, etc. My husband makes sure they always get lots of healthy treats :) But there's been no change in that. Also they free range in out grassy yard a lot .

What could be causing this feather loss??

two of our three older chickens (they’re 2 years old), sunddenly have patches on their back with broken feathers (both in the same spot - just the the right of their tail feathers. They arent molting and they are beautiful birds with no signs of mites or lice or anything of the sort. I would...

9 mo best layer stopped laying - help!

Also, just checked her over, and no mites or lice, and it turns out she is molting! We haven't seen many feathers from her drop, but she has lots of new pin feathers coming in! I thought she was too young to molt, but guess not! Now let's hope her eggs return again soon :) Thanks everyone!

9 mo best layer stopped laying - help!

@Beard4 , we're all searching for answers :) I'm going to go check her over again, but finders crossed she's just taking a break, and can resume egg production soon - this lady was working like a machine for 4 months! An egg nearly daily! So at first I was somewhat relieved ( for her sake) she...

9 mo best layer stopped laying - help!

Our best layer, a 9 month old Golden Comet went from laying an egg neary every day, to not laying a single egg in over a month! We can't figure out what is going on. She's too young to be molting i believe, and she's not being picked on ( in fact she's the only one that can fly over the fence...

Thank all! They weren’t fire ants but I went to check this morning and didn’t see a single ant.... maybe ants are smarter than I give them credit for 😂

ANTS! Do they pose a threat ??

My husband just put a bunch of mulch I. The chicken run all along the bottom and I went in 10 minutes later and the entire ground it infested with ants a- like SO MANY!!!!! I’m mortified but my husband thinks it’s no big deal. Should I be concerned? Should I remove all the mulch and pellets we...

    Need help with injured chicken🐔

Thank you- that brings comfort. My grandparents used to have chickens but that was always survival of the fittest, with backyard chickens it’s definitely easier feel like they’re pets 🥰

    Need help with injured chicken🐔

So a few days ago, on our out chicken broke her toe nail off ( only the tip) from I believe flying into the fence when one of our kids was trying to catch her 😞. Not totally sure but that’s what the kids report. I saw the blood on her toe which is when we noticed the toenail was broken at the...

Jersey giants - black wattle and comb??

We got her from a local farmer that got her from a hatchery 🤷🏻‍♀️ those breeds are super cool, and I do wonder if she’s a mix with something because she has many similar traits, but it also sounds like those are pretty rare so who knows. Here is a better picture of her. Bottoms of her feet are...

Jersey giants - black wattle and comb??

We have a jersey giant and she is 19 weeks old. I thought her comb and wattle would turn red at some point but it’s still super dark! Is this just a sign of immaturity? I know for other chickens the bright red comes when they are about to lay, but seems hard to go from black to red, no?? Haha...

    Winter-izing coops in the PNW??

Okay question about the wood chips - how do you keep the run clean with the wood chips? Right now our run is just dirt ( but they do free range half the day), so it’s super easy to rake up the poop to clean the run. We have pellets and chips ready to go in there but I can’t wrap my mind around...

    Winter-izing coops in the PNW??

Thank you! Super helpful idea with the plastic! We’re going to seal the edges of the coop to keep the rain from seeping in, but I really like the idea of the plastic base to keep the rain away from the chickens !

    Winter-izing coops in the PNW??

Hi all, we have a great coop/ run that my husband built this past spring for our chickens! It’s been great in the summer but as we’ve had a few cooler evenings, I’m wondering about whether we need to do anything to winter-ize the coop for the winter? Will the chickens need a heat source or...

    15 week old chickens- questions!!

Our chicks (5 hens) are about to turn 15 weeks this week- 1) is now a good time to open their nesting boxes? 2) should I switch them to laying feed? Or wait until the first egg?? I know switching them too early is bad, but I’m assuming they won’t all start laying at the same time, so I do t...

Sudden daze, slower moving and not making traditional chirping sounds

Our chicks at 8weeka old and all seemed healthy and active at lunch today when I went in and fed them some kale. Tonight I noticed our buff Orpington seemed totally out of it. Like she’s in a complete daze, and is slow moving. She didn’t want any greens when I brought them this evening ( usually...
