We have wormed them with Wazine and treated with Ivermectin..and gave them a good Seven dust. We did that after the first 2 deaths, before then last 2...3 weeks separated those deaths.
I have been doing daily checks for signs of egg binding. I had one that I suspected and did the whole bath...
Oh and I should mention that on the other chickens it was clear from the blood pattern that whatever happened was internal...it honestly looked like a small bomb blew them up from the inside.
No possum..we don't even have them up here. I know that this is not a predator issue...our chicken house is pretty tight and our dogs are in a pen around it. There is no way a predator is going past our two big dogs.
My husband and I have had chickens nearly our whole lives and have never really had any significant issues. This spring we ordered a new bath of chicks and they have just started laying in the last 4 weeks. Over the last week we have found more than one that is dead and appears to have blown...
I have ordered from Mcmurray twice. Once 20 years ago and once this spring. I ordered pullets only on both occasions. The first batch contained 1 extra chick, it was a rooster. The second batch contained 2 extra chicks, both were roosters.
In both cases all the chicks arrived safely and...
We have 5 gallon buckets with those red plastic nipples on the bottom for our chickens. They are great and we totally love them, but it suddenly occurred to us that we really don't know how to heat them for winter, so that they don't freeze. How are the rest of you handling this?
I love that you are stopping in the middle to take pictures of the chickens. I mean isn't that the mark of real chicken lover, you have to stop work and go get the camera to take a photo of a bird that looks the same as every other bird of it's breed? I do it all the time and my family just...
Very nice job! I am suddenly feeling like my chicken operation has room for expansion! I love the creativity of the feeder. The dog in the background is funny!
Yes they are EE's, my experience is that EE roosters start crowing the earliest of any of my birds. Normally by 14 weeks, but definitely by 18 weeks. They also are about the most lovely roosters ever! If you had an EE rooster, you would absolutely know it by 5 months. So I think you can...
I am not sure, but I had one of those once that leaked all the time. I finally exchanged it and the next one worked fine. Why don't you go to the store and see if the others are assembled like yours is
We had 6 BR's for a while, they were very difficult birds. They were decent as long as there world was perfectly managed, but if we were late feeding them by even an hour they would get really loud and would fly up at us. On of the hens was far worse than the rest, but all of them would follow...
Looks like a hen to me. 18 weeks is really old to not be showing any clear signs of being a rooster. I have never seen a rooster that wasn't at least trying to crow at 14 weeks, most of mine have started crowing by 10-12 weeks and all of them we were certain long before that as they were...
Ours are in their large pen until about 4PM, then we let them free range in our yard until they roost. Mine are typically done laying by 4PM, but occasionally one will lay after that and will go back to the hen house to do it.
So they are spending about 5 hours in our yard each evening and...
Every February, I order a new batch of hens. When the new ones start laying well in July/August, I sell most of the older hens. Occasionally I have a favorite that stays, but in general I sell my hens when they are 18-20 months old and still laying well.
I don't like to carry 2 year old...
We ordered our latest batch of chickens from McMurray hatchery and they gave us a free "rare breed chick." Unfortunately they didn't tell us what it was and they don't keep records of the "extras" that they include. The chicken in the picture is just over 2 months old and is about 2/3's the...
