We gott chicks from Meyers long ago with no issues.
Got broiler chicks from https://moyerschicks.com last year and they were as expected. Fat and fast growing, but not disgusting mutants like the Cornish Cross birds we got from somewhere else this year. McMurray's big red broilers are more...
That's probably pasty butt. You can search on the site for more info, but basically just clean it off with a warm wet cloth. It can be from keeping the chicks too warm. Check your temps and watch how the chicks behave. It's fairly common with hatchery or feed store chicks.
If it is left too...
I could be mistaken, perhaps someone can correct me, but I believe Bielefelder over Light Brahma should produce red sex linked chicks. Red females and white males. If so, your chick is a pullet.
Perhaps I was unclear. We let our chickens free range a good bit. He was outside, then tried to get back in the coop by flying over the fence into the run, but the netting covers the top of the run so he landed on that and got a bit tangled.
I disagree slightly. We raised some of Moyer's chicks hatchery choice broilers, not cornish cross, and I had to rescue one who got stuck on top of the netting over the run. The fence around the run is 4'.
A few caveats though:
This was at maybe 5 weeks or so, and our chicks were raised by a...
My guess would be that in introducing the blue color they lost some egg laying capability and won't or haven't yet been able to breed the egg production back up.
I found this in a bloody looking poop today. I picked it out and rinsed it to see it better.
Is it a worm? What kind, and how do I treat for them?
I would expect to treat the whole flock, probably late next week since we have a half dozen meat birds we're planning to process Wednesday.
In our family it is a bit less about getting heated, and more that it takes sooooooooooo long. We have the expansion to play with more people because we have a bunch of kids, and a few grandparents who live close. By the end, everyone just wants it to be over.
We like wingspan with the...
that head spot is concerning, but the eyeliner is very dark and distinct. I would cautiously say pullet. The males are generally lighter overall than the pullets. It's hard to see much in the picture you posted, but that is another clue you can consider.
Autosexing breeds need to be bred...
No, sadly the chicks will not be autosexing like full legbars.
The autosexing relies on a rooster with 2 copies of the barring gene and a hen with one. The gene is sex linked so males can have 0, 1, or 2 copies. Hens can have 0 or one.
Legbars, and similar autosexing breeds have roosters with...
I don't know yet. I'll find out this summer.
I culled an extra rooster last month at almost 1 year old. He weighed 6.1 lbs and dressed out at 3.75.
After a lifetime of supermarket cornish X chicken it is a challenge to adjust my expectations for how big and meaty a chicken should be.
Someone wanted sexed chicks, and the only autosexing or sex linked cross I have is bielefelders, so I also have an incubator full of bielefelder eggs. I'll keep any extra pullets for my flock, and eat the cockerels in a couple months.
