How can I get darker yolks?

We have Bufs and RI Reds. About 10 months old. Have laid eggs all winter. With spring and access to worms I thought that we would see a darkening of the yolks to a darker deeper orange. Our eggs still remain yellow. We feed them Dumour feed and kitchen scraps. Eggs are good size and well...

why are my chickens sleeping outside??????

Any exterior roosting bar will resort in your chickens using it as an evening roost as opposed to going inside the coop. Remove the external roosting bar or cover with a tarp at night so they go inside. Better safe than sorry. We had the same problem with our this Spring. Once we covered the...

    Roosting Outside

Many thanks for the input. Agreement with wife is that jungle gym is covered with a tarp at night as she still wants them to have access during the day for their mental health...... Tonight is first night in a month that the chickens are all in the coop before the door went down at 10PM. We...

    Roosting Outside

Our 8 chickens are about 10 months old. Have done well outside in the coop and fenced area. Son built a "jungle gym" of limbs between trees so they can sit during the day next to the coop. BUT, in the last 2 weeks they have all decided to sleep on the outside on the limbs instead of going...

How does oatmeal help chickens stay warm?

Yesterday it was mucho cold here so I cooked them some oatmeal, added some canola oil, added an egg to the hot mix and after it had cooked, I added some layer crumble to it. Let it cool outside. When offered in a cake pan, they cleaned it up in less than 15 minutes. GONE!
