We have four hens, about three years old. A neighbor wants to get rid of one chick and no one will take it. Is there any way I can get one of my hens to accept the chick? I've only ever had this one flock and we raised those 5 from chicks (one was attacked by a hawk and died at 2 years old, so...
Hi there. We have our first chickens ever. Got them when they were 1 day old, and now they're about 22 weeks. They're not laying, and I was wondering if that's normal. They have 3 nesting boxes with shavings in their coop. We're still feeding them the grower pellets since I thought you didn't...
Our chicks are about 2 months old, and so far haven't seen them even attempt a dust bath. They have shavings in their coop, and they get to run around the yard for a bit each day. There are some woods where they scratch in the leaf litter, but no attempt to dust bath. Do I need to make a dugout...
We put our girls out in the coop today, but since it's Maine and winter won't let go, they're out there with lots of shavings, half of their brooder box, and a 250w red heat light. I left the pop hole open today (overcast, windy, yucky) and the temp inside was a toasty 75-80 degrees which is...
Okay, so I'm getting the coop ready to move the girls out as soon as winter really leaves, and I saw lots of "DE" posts. For the litter, in the food, dust baths... My questions are:
1. when do the chicks need the DE?
2. Do I just sprinkle it in the food?
3. Does it go into the bedding...
We're trying to get our coop together and have a few questions.
1. Can we use cedar posts to hold the fencing on the run portion of the coop, or is that a no-no?
2. How high off the ground do the nesting boxes need to be? (we have a welsummer, easter eggers, a wyandotte, and an australorp)...
I posted on the "emergencies..." board, but wanted to put a "feeler" in this room. My 6 day old chick is making gagging motions and sticking her neck out, but not chirping. There's a video of her on the other board. Pooping, drinking, eating fine. Crop is about the same as the other chicks' as...
Our Australorp chick - 6 days old - keeps craning her neck and opening her beak, but not chirping when she does it. Her crop doesn't feel any bigger than the other chicks'. She's pooping. I (think) I attached a video so you can see. Any ideas?? Thanks!
My 4 day old girls seem to be avoiding the heat lamp like the plague. I raised the lamp, so it's 88 degrees below it, but they're still off in the corners. Is it possible the little peeps are really warm? I always heard the temp is supposed to be 95-100 for the first week. I put some pictures...
Our chicks are 3 days old now, and I can't believe how cute they are! :
I can see how this is addictive. Here are some pictures (I can't believe I'm uploading pics of chicks!)
Artemis Fowl - Australorp (Seachick's Olivia helped name this one!)
Freebie - SLW? - smallest and loudest!, and Gwen...
We're new at this, and just got our chicks yesterday. Brooder, temp, water are all fine, and chicks seems healthy: peeping sometimes, sleeping sometimes, drinking, DEFINITELY pooping , but it seems they pick up the food and fling it, not sure they're actually eating it. We tried making a mash of...
