Situation: mom hen with 7 six week old chicks sleep in outside smaller coop inside main run. I have 23 adult birds. The chicks intermingle on a daily basis with the total flock. No issues whatever with integration. I'd like to move these little ones and momma after dark into the main coop. What...
What my final outcome was: with 3 broodies I said to the girls - look - only 1 of you gets chicks. The test is tonight. That night I moved one of the broodies to my only other coop area -- a smaller coop within the main chicken pen that I've used as a brooder coop in the past. That girl was not...
3 went broody at the same time. I was planning to slip chicks under them tonight to raise. I've done this before but with only 1 hen. Can I keep the 3 hens with chicks together? I'm trying to create their nursery space today. I'm planning to section off a part of the coop with 3 separate nests...
Looking for thoughts. I have 19 ladies. They have 5 nest boxes. They lay in a couple only and literally try to push the other out of the nest. It’s like gang-laying. They have to lay where the other is trying to lay. I have cameras in my coop and watch them try and push the other out with their...
The momma is still in a protective mode — she will still expand herself 3x her size and chase other hens away from her determined territory. I worry that if I force her before she’s ready to wean them that she will be territorial with the main coop. I have shut the tractor and watched the...
Momma hen self hatched 10 and I added 6 to her little family 7.5 weeks ago. The purchased chicks are more toward a week older. Still peeping but good size. Mother has her chicks in with the general population but she continues to take them into the chicken tractor at night where they are...
To follow up on this — chick spent the night indoors under heat. I woke up to a healthy fluffy chick. Placed her with her siblings and momma hen paid no more attention than if I had just picked up one of the others and put it back. Chick is with siblings and momma - all is well.
To follow up on this. By late afternoon momma seems to have forgotten she had an issue and she is treating all the chicks equally. Took a nap for her to forget... LOL - just like a chicken..
Need to know what to do. Mother hen left the nest with 3 eggs left behind. One was pipping. She stayed away most of the day with her new brood. I took the 3 eggs and put under heat. 12 hrs later the one chick has hatched. Do I take her back out to the coop and put it under the mother.... with...
Here is the scenario - broody sitting on 12 eggs. Knowing a number would be roos, on hatch day, I bought 5 pullets that went under her at night. No issues. Eggs continue to hatch through the day. However 2 of my 5 pullets did not survive - squashed? Or knows. But the 3 that were left she...
I have a hen sitting day 21 tomorrow - 12 eggs. Tractor Supply will have a shipment in the AM. They expect to sell out in an hour. I want to slip 6 pullets under sitting hen .... insurance that I will have pullets and I won’t keep any Roos that she’ll hatch anyway.
Question is — do I have to...
Great! Thanks for answering. I will slide some insulation under the plastic tray. The tractor is already draped with a moving blanket and a tarp. And it does have an upstairs. Although the ramp is pulled up for now. Might be momma will be ready to move them up the ramp by the time the colder air...
Thank you!! I feel better about the temperature! She is very liquid laying on those eggs. And she fluffs up twice her size if any chicken looks at her. I will keep a close eye on her and that tractor she’s in has an upstairs. After a couple of days, I’ll lower the ramp to the upstairs and then...
I have a hen sitting on 12 eggs -- that will hatch today/tomorrow. I saw one egg move slightly when she took her morning stroll. I have her in a chicken tractor inside the chicken pen. She's been a good broody. My concern is the weather is changing -- colder. A lot colder. They aren't directly...
