I'm in NC, an extremely rural little town. My town ordinance was ridiculous about letting me keep chickens even though I own an acre lot that is backed by woods and no neighbors. There is a lot of property between any of my neighbors and my house. The town council wouldn't address the change...
I have one white Leghorn that I call my "dog chicken". She follows me around the pen and if I don't pay attention to her she will peck my leg, like "Look, here I am, down here". If I sit down somewhere she will fly into my lap. If I pick her up she will sit with me forever. Sweetest thing in...
I was so excited when I got my first egg. My husband called it the thousand dollar egg because that's probably how much we had invested in the whole deal!
I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I know I read on here that their poo can become watery in the summer when they drink a lot of extra water. May be the medication or could be extra water intake?
I have an EE and she's been handled as much as my other birds and she still hates to be touched! She is my least friendly bird. Maybe it's something with them.
I forgive her because she's beautiful and gives me pretty green eggs.
I think I might have come out firing warning shots into the air. It would have scared the **** out of tehm. Maybe having the gun pointed at them was enough.
My chickens will eat all kinds of beans. They always get my leftovers. I eat beans a lot as my meat replacement at dinnertime and there's always some leftover for the girls. Good source of protein!
I don't know the folks who took the roosters, they were being delivered by a friend of my sister. They will be living on a farm where they do horse rescue and they raise ducks and chickens and sell the eggs. The chickens are all in safe enclosures and properly cared for.
I feel good knowing...
I knew it had to come. But I'm really not ready. My two little roosters are going to a new home today. I hate to have to do it, but I can't keep them here in town. They will be living on a farm not too far away. It's good that they will have a chance at life and not be someone's dinner. I...
My sweet Buffy has a sour crop. She shows all of the symptoms--crop large and hard first thing in the morning before feeding. She won't come down off of her roost in the morning without help. She has the smell from her beak and when she got pecked earlier this morning some yucky looking fluid...
Two of my sweet chicks have turned out to be roos and I can't have them where I live. They are both 3 months old and living happily together. They both came from members here. I can't ship but if you're close I would consider driving to get them a good home (and not the stew pot!). I'm in NE...
Mine love anything remotely related to food. The gobble up everything I bring in there. I haven't tried raisins but I'm sure they would love them. They just about attack me whenever I come in the yard looking for treats.
When 4 of my 7 pullets turned out to be roos purchased at TSC, I spoke to the manager. She gave me my money back. Not like that covered the feed, etc. that I had spent on them but luckily I was able to give away all 4 to people I knew.
I'm illegal too. My town states I must have 1/2 acre per bird. So on my 1 acre lot in a very rural town, I could legally have 2 chickens (after a hearing for a permit, with my neighbors in attendance to give permission). Needless to say, I said ***** that and I have 11 right now.
One day the...
The silly dears! I have one that is also broody, without eggs and without a rooster. I take her out of the nest several times a day and she always puffs up and growls at me. She grumps while she's out and pecks at anyone that comes near her. I figure as long as she's eating and drinking she...
