    paralyzed chicken

Are you feeding fermented feed? I killed two of my chicken before figuring out it was the feed. One became partially paralyzed and the other appeared to have CRD. Both those symptoms can be caused by moldy feed. I thought I was doing everything right with fermenting but I guess it's too hot...

    Bubble thing on neck/back

Unfortunately, the chick didn't make it. It kept coming back and was getting worse. I suspect there was more going on than this. Even before he got the bubble, he was smaller than all the other chicks of the same age and still had most of his down where the other chicks were mostly feathered...

    Pullet losing control of legs.

I will have to get a picture tomorrow. I'm at work right now. My son's graduation is tonight. We are having a pre-graduation celebration with the grands right after I get off work, then going straight to graduation so I won't be home until dark. What I first noticed was that the leg didn't...

    Pullet losing control of legs.

I think it's the feed. I started feeding fermented feed a few weeks ago. I thought I was doing it right, stirring twice a day and watching for the wrong color mold, etc. I think I will throw out this batch and start over. Hopefully it's not too late for her.

    Pullet losing control of legs.

She is a 3 to 4 month old pullet. I think she is some type of Phoenix and is smaller than the other juveniles in her pen. I noticed about a week ago she was having trouble with one leg. Thinking one of the bigger juveniles trampled her or something, I moved her to a pen with smaller and...

    Bubble thing on neck/back

I think you might be right about it being a ruptured air sack. We used a syringe to let the air out. Weird thing is, it went down and then filled right back up. I did inject antibiotics into it before putting him back in the brooder. There is the tail end of another chick to the right. I...

    Bubble thing on neck/back

I have a 6 week old Orpington chick who up until recently had a small 'thing' on his back about where it joins the neck and wing. It's bare and looked a little puffy there. When he is excited, it would kind of pulse. Also, he has very few feathers and is the size of a 3 week old chick...

    Fermented feed question

Anyone feed it to horses? After reading all the benefits of feeding it to chickens, I wondered if it could be fed to horses. I am finding almost no information on it. Searches keep coming up with chaffhay. I was thinking of keeping it simple and using their current feed and alfalfa/timothy...

    Welsummers?

Thanks everyone! That pretty much confirms what I already strongly suspected. Any guesses as to what breed they actually are?

    Welsummers?

Whatever they are, I'm pretty certain they are the same breed as they have the same build and are all more flighty than the other chicks. I will try to get better pictures of them.

Supposidly these are Easter Eggers? Thoughts?

Maybe a mix? Any feathers on the legs?

    Welsummers?

I had 3 chicks sold to me as Welsummers. The brown one at the back and the black/white one to the right in the one picture are two of them. The 3rd one is also black/white. Both of the black/white one are roosters. Do any of these look like Welsummers to you knowledgeable folks?

I want to encourage breeders to become N.P.I.P. certified.

Speckledhen - Thanks for the information. I plan to sell chicks out of state (hopefully) so will need it. I for some reason thought it was good for a couple years. If I have to retest yearly, then I will wait until I have my breeders. Now if it would only dry up, I can get started on coops...

I want to encourage breeders to become N.P.I.P. certified.

I have a question about getting NPIP certified. Right now I have a backyard flock but we plan to start breeding and selling chicks next year. Should I have my current flock tested to get NPIP certification or do I need to wait until I have the chickens I plan to breed here? Also, in Texas...

    Very aggressive hen

What is a Penless Peeper? It might be better to rehome her. She doesn't behave that aggressively with the other hens. One is dominant over her and the other two she dominates but not with the same aggression she goes after the Silkies.

    Very aggressive hen

I knew she was aggressive because she was given to me after going out of her way to attack half grown chicks. She was kept penned at her previous home so I hoped if kept free range, it wouldn't happen. I have her and my adult chickens in one coop and chicks (half grown now) in another coop...

Well, this thing was SUPPOSED to be protecting the chickens.. not the other way around :/

If you really want to make it work, there are a couple of sites that you can refer to in training her. Homesteadingtoday.com has a board specifically for LGDs. The people there are very helpful if you really want help. I personally do not think you are patient enough to work with this pup...

Well, this thing was SUPPOSED to be protecting the chickens.. not the other way around :/

I've noticed several people suggest puppy training classes. Livestock Guardian Breeds often do not do well at obedience. They are bred to think and work independently. The urge to protect their livestock is there and dogs that have never seen livestock can (not guaranteed though) be brought...
