Crazy winds over here the past few days, with Tuesday being the worst. Girls spent most of their time under the coop or in it, while Lorelei and the babies were safe in the garage. Glad everyone is safe after the weird weather and storms this past week! And back to summer temps next week!

Wow, I really like that! Did you design this yourself, or use a plan? We have the five chicks Lorelei hatched, plus 4 new girls coming in two weeks. Then a few Chocolate/Lavender Orf chicks in mid-July. I’ve been wondering where to keep them all before integrating them with the flock.

Lorelei has hatched 5 of the 7 eggs (as of last night)! Four Americana's, and one…Naked Neck! If it’s a pullet, we’re going to keep her, name her Lily. Lorelei is a good mama, teaching her babies to scratch and peck. Moving them into a larger brooder once the other two eggs hatch. Thanks...

Thank you! I will do that starting tomorrow morning.

Well, hello everyone! Life caught up to me, and I finally have time to come back to this group! We have a Sapphire Gem who is broody and sitting on 14 eggs, which are mixed Ameracaunas. Moved her out of the coop into a nesting box in a dog crate, with food and water out for her. She’s been in...

I agree! We bought our first chicks from the L&M in Hayward. Our mail order chick experience was sad - 2 of 4 chicks didn’t make it, and the third one died despite our best efforts. Going to try to find someone up this way who has a Midnight Majesty Maran and a Buff Brahma they’d like to...

Hey everyone! Any news on what is going on with Hoover’s? They’ve posted that they won’t have any chicks for the rest of 2025. All their breed listings have “not available”. Was hoping to get three chicks from L&M this spring.

So, guess who I found, laying in the egress window this morning? Schatze. Alive! Picked her up, and checked her out. No injuries, so that was good. Took her over to the run, and she ate with the others, drank some water and went up into the coop and plopped down. Her crown is flopped over...

We lost Schatze, the Midnight Majesty Maran today. I didn’t see her when I called the flock in - guessing she went somewhere quiet to die. I miss her already. Of our original 9 girls, we’re now down to two. On a funny note, we were gifted two year old Buff Orfs on Saturday. Kept them...

    Congrats!!!

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

She hasn’t laid an egg since early June. We don’t have a rooster, so no hatching. Forgot to mention she’s 15 months old now. No one picks on her; she’s pretty mellow, and generally hangs with the other two girls her age. Checked her crop, it’s empty. Her crown is floppy, and she moves slower...

I could use some advice. Schatze, our Midnight Majestry Maran, stopped laying in June, when the babies were introduced. Since then, we lost four of the original girls to predators. This week, she started acting off. Usually the first one out to eat in the morning, she started to wander off by...

No rooster anymore, so molt it is! Thank you!

Happy August, everyone! Sure loved the few cool days up here last week, compared to the high temps earlier. Saw some Maples are turning already, and we have a fern that is already yellow. Our older girls are 14-months old now. Is this a sign of their first molt?

Since the owl attacks, we’ve been keeping them locked in the run until later in the morning. Plus, the four of them religiously sit in the nesting boxes each day, plus they do their egg song before and after they’re in it.

I was wondering if it was that, too.

Any idea what this is? Discovered it the other morning when I went to check for eggs (our four remaining big girls are still on strike). Don’t know what to think of this.

We had three really nice days up here for the 4th. Today started humid and sunny, but by 3pm we had some really heavy rain come down. Like we needed any more!

    All hens stopped laying!

The girls are coming back around to their usual silly selves! Taking scratch from our hands, and have had a few soft eggs laid in the run and nesting boxes. Plus the two flocks are tolerating each other now, and hanging out together more. Woo Hoo!
