Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good to see everyone is doing fine for the most part.
Badger Farms just a note that my hens are more quiet
and subtle when in molt. I think they feel ugly and just hide out. Hens
will stop laying for up to 6 weeks here when molting.

We lost Schatze, the Midnight Majesty Maran today. I didn’t see her when I called the flock in - guessing she went somewhere quiet to die. I miss her already. Of our original 9 girls, we’re now down to two.

On a funny note, we were gifted two year old Buff Orfs on Saturday. Kept them segregated from the flock until today, when I let them out to free range and see how they did. Got home and checked the coop - guess who had themselves on the top roosting bar? 🤣

Our old roo passed this summer too from old age. He was lucky to have a nice long free range life for sure. The hens
miss the old boy for sure.

We've got an old roo too that keeps on going. He's been caught eating oyster shells now out of the dish I have for the hens. Maybe his old bones need calcium? I've never heard of such a thing but if he wants them, I'll not stop him.

Sorry about the loss of your Maran, but it is part of raising chickens for sure.

So, guess who I found, laying in the egress window this morning? Schatze. Alive!

Picked her up, and checked her out. No injuries, so that was good. Took her over to the run, and she ate with the others, drank some water and went up into the coop and plopped down.

Her crown is flopped over, and her color is fading. I’m just stumped. No signs of water belly. Just can’t shake the feeling that she’s fading, and it’s time to let her go.

I read something about that recently and I did see an ad on craigslist the other day for free chickens, but I certainly can't take chickens and I think any backyard farmer can't take that kind of quantity.
I sure feel bad for the people that got screwed over by that big company, though. I hope somehow they can get rid of the chickens.
If I read this correctly, these were meat chickens.
