Just wanted to pass along, we have been battling bumblefoot in one hen it seems like forever...we did the surgery, we tried soaking, antibiotic ointment, oral antibiotics meant for staph, red wonder oil, betadine/iodine stuff we had from our horses, and no matter what we did it just didn't go...
First I want to say that BUMBLEFOOT IS A PAIN IN THE PATOOT!!!! I have a rooster I will have to cull because I didn't catch the bumblefoot soon enough and it has become resistant to antibiotics and it moved into his hocks. I don't think I would give antibiotics without first working on their...
We are dealing with bumblefoot right now too. We have some forceps that came in a first aid kit. They have been pretty handy for getting that cheesy junk out. You might try them if you have some around.
OK, the roo we operated on was doing better, now today he didn't seem as perky so I talked to a vet about the possibility of him being resistant to the Pen G. The roo still has infected looking hocks, which we have treated, cleaned etc..plus nine days of Pen G injections. The vet felt we had...
Tamra, I have broodies all the time. Sometimes they are broody up to a month because I don't let them hatch any eggs. What kind of hen is she? If she is cochin/silkie/or english game banty she may take to live chicks being placed uner her. I have done this several times with good results...
Well we did the bumblefoot surgery on our roo tonight. My partner is a real trooper, she did the cutting...I was going to take pics but she was as stressed as the roo! We used a new scalpel (ubersharp..be careful if you use one) to cut across the scab quite deep, as deep as she dared go...
Does she resemble a penguin? I had a hen do that for a while, she would get better, then she finally passed. I think she was an internal layer??? You might want to post some pics. Maybe some one will come along with a better direction. Good luck.
Thanks Dawg we have all those supplies on hand! Thanks..if anyone else wants to put in their two cents worth go ahead. I will take pics and post if we do the surgery.
Thanks Dawg..vindication...We have been treating with PenG for six days. Like I said his hocks are much better. Do you think we should do surgery? The lump is extremely hard, not sure how much help soaking will be, but willing to try it first. If we do surgery where would you cut? Do we cut...
Sorry this pic is sort of blurry, the roo wasn't cooperating. This round lump is VERY hard and about 1/4 inch raised. We have a dispute over whether this is bumblefoot. What do you think? Bumblefoot or not? I say 99.9 percent positive yes. My partner isn't so sure. The roo also has very...
I am curious about something..I have a broody banty hen, so I have been looking for a few bantam chicks to buy and put under her, of course to no avail. I don't want 15 chicks as I already about 35 chickens, just wanted to let my little banty hen raise a few chicks (her eggs weren't fertile)...
Just my two cents...I work for one of the "major" shipping companies..believe me you DO NOT want live chicks being shipped this way. It makes me ill that they ship fish..even over night. I don't even want to think about it!! That being said I once sent two dozen eggs to a friend that had never...
We don't have rats here I don't think? He is the only one like this, I have about 30 other birds, including a banty hen brooding outside on the ground. Looks terrible doesn't it?
Heatherberry you sound like a kind person, so don't feel silly for taking her to the vet. The time to cull, IMHO, is after you have done what you can, even if that includes going to the vet. We agree there. (Even if it is for a rooster you don't like) ;0)If your kids are attached, why not? I...
This is a pic of my roos legs. You can see a white looking part in his hock, it is still fuzzing from the peroxide. This is actually black, like a nasty scab, it doesn't smell necrotic. He did not have a typical bumble, but we did pull out a piece of wood, which I suspect introduced the...
Thanks for the reply. I probably would just treat it by soaking if it weren't in his hocks. We went and got some PennG, we are getting ready to work on him. I was wondering if anyone had success with PennG and bumblefoot. Thanks, Nat
Before I went on vacation I posted a topic about my roo that had red sores and cracks in his hocks. We were treating with peroxide and it seemed to be getting better. Now that I am home from vacation I can see what looks like bumblefoot on the back of his foot and he is limping again. I am...
