    Chickens and Weeds... how safe?

Sounds like everyone thinks I should try it. I worry a little since I know how toxic the nightshade is and it's currently in berries... but I know that if we don't let them eat them, then they'll never get to free range.

    Chickens and Weeds... how safe?

I wasn't sure if this went here or not so I apologize but I just couldn't find a better place to post it. I want to start letting my girls out to free range a little each day, but I have a HUGE weed problem in my yard. I know that the chickens will enjoy the weeds and the bugs hiding in the...

    Sand in brooder

Just wanted to post my experience. I ended up putting paper over the sand for now. My two day old chicks were doing nothing but eating the sand... I let them go at it for a while but I started to worry when they wouldn't stop eating it, I know a little is good for them but they were completely...

    Sand in brooder

I hope so because I am right now... They are eating some but I've been told they need a little grit anyway. I'll let you know if it hurts them but I'm trying it with two day old chicks right now.

new chicks and 4 week old chicks... okay?

That's still hopeful for me. I was afraid I'd have to keep them separated longer than that. Maybe if I keep them separated until these ones are a week or two... and put them together... (still keeping and eye but maybe not having to have them blocked off from each other). That would be nice...

new chicks and 4 week old chicks... okay?

The one hope I have for mixing them is that up until a week ago they had a real little welsummer in with them with no problem. In fact they frequently would take turns keeping her warm. I don't know what went wrong with my two welsummers but they were 2 days old when I got my barred rocks (same...

new chicks and 4 week old chicks... okay?

I had a group of chicks all about the same age growing up together and then lost my two welsummers... so I just bought three gold laced wyandottes to replace the welsummers. The problem is I have five chicks at four weeks now and three at 2 days old... if I put them together will the 4 week old...

lost a chick, should I be concerned?

I'm really kicking myself over having bought from a store that gave me a bad feeling but I drove way out of my way because they had the breeds I wanted and no where close did. I've since learned they are at least as bad as I felt. One of the things I noticed was a lot of the chicks had poop...

DE and pine shavings? Chickens roosting on ledge to nesting box?

We didn't remove the ledge completely we just lowered it. I think we may have to remove it completely. The roosting bars are all higher than the ledge now but they are still roosting on the ledge. Although I may not bother since the ledge is lower than the nesting boxes they aren't pooping in...

DE and pine shavings? Chickens roosting on ledge to nesting box?

I'm in trouble then because one bar is higher than the ledge and they are still using the ledge. I can't put both bars higher than the ledge because my coop is only just over four feet high.

    Wood vs. Metal Nest Boxes

We built wooden nesting boxes and I'm pretty happy with them. Our nesting boxes hang on the outside of the coop and my only complaint is that I didn't paint it fast enough and it rained on it. The lid for getting to the eggs warped and we now need to replace it. So if you are going to use wood...

    Straw or hay????????????

I've been using hay for about two months. I don't think my girls it the hay at all though. The hay out here is mostly alfalfa though you can really smell it and it is very green. I've used pine shavings too though. Personally my girls don't seem bothered by either. Good luck!

DE and pine shavings? Chickens roosting on ledge to nesting box?

We've got neighbors who have chickens and they run free and don't even have a coop but we live in phoenix and it's pretty warm here so I guess that's fine for them but we choose to build a coop and run and ended up needing it because our dogs wouldn't stop killing our chickens. They even broke...

    Wazine and Eggs (worm medicine)

I came across this the other day I thought the link might be helpful. http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Chicken-Health/Wazine-17-8-oz-p528.aspx I bought a bottle and was going to worm my four remaining chickens after illness killed three of my girls. But I got home and read the bottle...

Two layers left, one with diarria are they well now?

Not a bad thought I gave them a vitamin electrolyte boost to their water today but tomorrow I'll add some molasses instead. I just don't want to start feeding the eggs to my family especially not my 16 month old if whatever made the others six can be passed on through the eggs.

Two layers left, one with diarria are they well now?

We lost three hens recently and we think it was due to Mareks but no way to know since we didn't take them for a necropsy. We have two remaining girls that seem to be fine except that I have noticed their poop is runny and also a little white foamy. When I break the poop I don't see anything...

Two dead chickens in two days please help.

Quote: Who knows. I gave my girls yogurt and oatmeal, I started giving them the chick starter since the chicks (should start calling them pullets they are feathered out already) were surviving fine. But other than the one try with the erythromycin which we decided couldn't of helped because I...

Two dead chickens in two days please help.

Wanted to update everyone. We still have two living hens and two living chicks. We went ahead with the erthromycin with no idea about how much to give. I crushed some and put it in their water. I figured we had nothing to lose at this point. The two remaining hens were siting like the others...

    laid egg and died

Wish I knew what's going on for you. My girls were laying for at least a month before dying although I will say that my last girl the rock died a few hours after there being an egg laid I can't say for sure if it was hers but it was on the ground near her and not in the nesting boxes like usual...

Two dead chickens in two days please help.

Quote: I don't see the earlier post I must be blind but I doubt it is heat. They are dying around 9 and 10pm which is an odd time to die if it is the heat, the chicks are doing the best of the flock and I would think they would be more sensitive to the heat. Also they have been laying for one...
