Sigh oh the issues in chicken world are never ending..apparently.
I’ve got a flock of 27 hens with 2 roosters. They have a large coop, yard and run. (They also free range in the evening). Then I’ve got a bachelor flock of 4 roosters, coop yard, run and they too free range (at different times...
Oh yeah we’ve got ALL those disease carriers as well. I’m in the country surrounded by woods so they are definitely prevalent. My husbands like “why don’t you just wear pants?” Uh because I don’t want to sweat to death!
4-h for sure. They almost always have roosters they need to rehome.
I’ve had really good luck (so far) raising a cockerel with the flock. My hens tend to school them really well. Of course it helps that with one exception, my roosters are bantams and most of my hens are standards.
Awwww I love the little first eggs. My little pullet laid her first today. She’s about 18 weeks. Her mother is a white bantam Cochin, and daddy is a HUGE Wyandotte. Her egg was small and cream colored, just like her mother’s. I would’ve thought it was Morticias (her mother) but she’s broody-AGAIN.
I don’t know what haying season is, but from May to October I wear nothing but shorts and no show socks or barefoot. They definitely hitchhike a ride into my house on the husband. They’re horrible disease carrying terrors. And I recently found out they’re ARACHNIDS AHHHH!!!! Spiders! Blood...
I googled mafia plant…I got nothing, except a restaurant called the mafia lol. And I’m not judging..I’m just saying I’d be a bit apprehensive eating there. 😆
They’ll blend right in lol. I’ll have to pass them off as mutant chickens to my husband.
“Are those new animals?!?”
Me- “nope. The new chicks must’ve mutated. Must be the heat 🤷♀️.”
I’m only laughing because it’s true. My legs are eat up. Last year I got into poison ivy and itched/scratched like a crazy person. This year mosquitoes! I’ve tried everything. Bug spray, a bucket of water with “poisoned”mosquito food, I’m pretty sure they just use that to breed. It’s been over...
I know it difficult. I couldn’t cull a perfectly fine rooster, concerning health. I’ve got 7 roosters total. Two are in the flock. Actually 3 are in the flock but my latest one is a Cochin bantam he’s 10 weeks old, and so far the hens are doing a great job schooling him. (I’ll see how that...
I’ll add my 2 cents. Do you need a rooster..I’m not sure. Do you need a “bad” rooster? No!
I’ve got 30 hens and they have two wonderful roosters. The boys are great to the hens and my family and I. They keep hen bickering down, and my primary has shown my pullets where to lay. Neither rooster...
I’ve never processed a chicken before. Is 7 lbs a good weight? I’m thinking..the turkey I buy for the holidays are 18 ish pounds..so 7lbs for a chicken..wait my biggest rooster is 12 lbs so 7 lbs is…wait my smallest bird is 1.5 lbs..ok it’s obvious I have no idea. Is 7lbs a good weight?
