Seems like broodieness is a virus, it spreads. Broody hens will steal eggs, non-broody hens will lay eggs next to the broody and even help roll them under the broody. Guess its just a part of chicken math.
I put day 18 eggs from our incubator under two silkies and one orp, all three were broody. All three accepted the eggs. Day 19, the orp hatched one egg and left the nest and did not return. I moved the hatchling to the brooder and the unhatched egg to the incubator. one silkie hatched one egg...

My silkies each swiped large orpington eggs, moving them several feet up an incline to their nests. They also swiped other silkie and cochen eggs. My white one had 9 banty and 1 orp. egg, today she 12 banty and 1 orp. Those extra eggs were several feet away from the broodies.
One of our broody silkies just hatched our first home made chicken this morning. we have two silkies sitting, each have around a dozen eggs. Many of them stolen from other hens, including orpington.

I think my red sex link tried to eat me the other day. I was sitting on a log in their yard looking at my roo's foot and all a sudden I was being ambushed from behind! then my brahma joined in! My back was covered in scratches. Now I never turn my back for fear of being eaten alive...
CHICKEN MATH. Set a square dozen buff orp's, and 4 ea. silkie at 12:30 AM, 7/1. At 12:00 PM, 7/1, I checked and was about 10 silkie and about 18 buff orp's. Every time I look there are a few more. I checked around 10:30 Pm, 7/2, only a couple slots left. It is now 1:18 AM, 7/4, and I refuse to...
this is a rooster.
not all roosters crow right away, he'll learn soon. if he tears or is mean to the hens, he needs to be stewed.hens do not need a rooster unless you need fertile eggs. i had 3 roosters for 20 hens. one was mean and damaged hens, only need 2 roo's. moved him to another pen. he...
you can get a 12volt direct current power supply from any 2nd hand thrift store. the fan can come from any old computer. i have two of the lg's and the hold temps better than my hovabator. just make sure the fan blows up toward the top of the bator.

Last summer I used the little tree vanilla air fresheners and they kept the coops free of flies. As they aged and had less scent I would spray them with a can of vanilla scent. The best place to buy the tree and aerosol refill is a truck stop, I put one in my truck to stop them coming...
eye catching coop. excellent job of adding silicone seal, adding rubber seals, no water will get in there. but no water will get out either. plastic will sweat, chickens breath producing moisture, etc. you need several square feet of vents at the top of vertical walls. you could also open some...

my chickens had no insulation, no heat and survived our 30 degrees below Fahrenheit. my large breeds and the silkie colony. just lots of ventilation.

takes 5 min to disassemble a pallet with a saws all (reciprocating saw) and a deconstruction blade. those buildings are made with full pallets cut to shape.
i'm building a chicken house and wood shed using the same methods. very sturdy.
