She's An Old Girl and Still Laying!

I have Red Star or Red Star link I'm not sure of the breed. It's a cross between A Rhode Island and something else. She just turned 9. She was raised with a RIR and a leghorn and they both died last year. Gabriel is still laying on a regular basis! She is laying at least 4-5 eggs a week and has...

    More Crop Problems

I have a three 13 week old Barred Rocks. One has become very lethargic. Her crop is squishy and seems to be filled with gas. They are with older chickens most of the day and I was wondering if her eating layer feed instead of chick feed is causing a problem. They are all over the backyard. She...

    Crop Problems!

I have a silkie with crop problems. She was very lethargic and not moving. This has gone on for several months. We were able to empty the crop on several different occasions and gave her some mineral water. She is doing very good now. Very energetic and eating. The problem is that she has...

Help with a 13 week old chick!

Hi everyone, I have a a little problem. I have 4 hens that are a year old. Two leghorns and two red stars. We were given a 13 week old RIR from a friend who couldn't keep her anymore because of dogs. We took her in and my original 4 hens have not been very nice. I know the pecking order has to...

    New Chicken in the group!

I have four hens. Two Longhorns and two Red Stars. A friend had two chicks that they couldn't keep anymore. We took them in. The chicks are 13 weeks old. The pecking order has started and it's making the two chicks very fearful. Should we isolate the new girls or will things eventually change...

Molting sure is taking a long time!

This is our first experience with chicks. They will be 1 in March. They were laying eggs for about two months then stopped. They lost lots of feathers and have grown them back but are still not laying eggs. How long does a molt last? They are healthy happy girls.

    I'm concerned about my Leghorns!!

I have five chickens two red stars, RIR, and two leghorns. My three brown birds are laying and the leghorns are going into the nest boxes but not doing anything. Shouldn't they be laying by now. All five birds are around 5 1/2 months old. The leghorns are very healthy and very tame.

    When is pecking order established???

We had older chickens a while back and the pecking order was established right away. Starting with our Black Jersey Giant, RIR, The two White Rocks, and then the Buff Orpington. These girls have since passed away and we wanted to get more chickens starting with chicks. They are 8 weeks old but...

Better shots of my two white chicks any guesses on breed?

Here is a better shot of our two white chicks they are 7 weeks old and happy in the coop. I stuck the camera in the little door and they have learned to roost just fine. I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what type of breed the white ones are. When we bought them they were listed as...

Chicks went to bed by themselves!!

Well I wanted to send a couple of pics but I still can't figure it out. Anyway, After a week of my 5 chicks chirping loudly and not going to bed by themselves I looked out in the backyard at 7:45pm and they were in the coop already perched. Chickens are amazing creatures. This is our first time...

    Loud chicks at night!

I have 5 chicks around 8 weeks old I just put them in the hen house about 3 days ago. They roost great, eat great, and play. At night they all gather in one area of the pen and chirp loudly. This last for a while then I finally go out there and put them in the coop and shut the door. They will...

Do baby chicks roost a lot when moved to the Hen House?

My chicks are energetic when eating and looking around the pen but they seem to be roosting a lot. Is that normal for baby chicks or should they be running around all day. They seem to like hanging out in the hen house.

Thanks for the advice on baby chicks roosting!!!

It was quite in the hen house today so went in the pen and looked inside all 5 hens were roosting. I was very happy to see that. Now another question...... I remember my older hens running around all day. These chicks seem to roost more then run around is it because they are young?
