Daylight Savings Time = NO EGGS!!

Last winter my hens laid with no interruptions, but they had just started laying in Oct./Nov. of last year so they were young. This is their second Fall/Winter and they stopped laying last week all of them. I read the stress article so it most likely is due to that, I put a young rooster in with...

Need help from a Rhode Island Red expert.

Thanks for the responses, I guess I will find out for sure in the next few weeks. I plan to keep one of these hens for my laying hens, I had 2 die last year. I have another batch of Americauna's to hatch for someone in a couple of weeks, I will keep one of those to have 5 brown and 2 colored egg...

    80 Degrees....?

Be calm, a 60 watt bulb placed about 12 - 15 inches above the floor of the brooder will keep them fine. This is my 2nd batch with that setup, I am batting 100% with them.

Tractor Supply Employee Knowledge About Chicks

Strange, must be local management because the one I went to this past Saturday had Pullets - White Legorns, and another bin with Straight Run - Cornish X's. By the way, I am in Bowling Green Ky. I never realized a national brand store would be so different territorially. This one here kind of...

Need help from a Rhode Island Red expert.

I just completed a hatch of 6 RIR's, very outgoing little peeps compared to my last batch of barnyard mixed. My question is this, I have 2 that have 3 dark brown racing stripes down their backs, the other 4 are lighter and have plain backs. Is this difference in any way related to the sex of the...

Need some help, other forum directed me here.

My problem with having a rooster is that the deed restrictions specifically prohibit poultry, however I called the county and they said they have no restrictions that it was local "subdivision" restriction. There are 4 houses in my "subdivision", I am on 4.5 acres, and the other houses have 2.5...

Need some help, other forum directed me here.

One of my egg laying girls is a barred rock, she is a very sweet, docile BIG girl. So I agree, but if you spend time on the hatching forum and the price and casualties of mailed eggs, you will understand. I can get the RIR eggs to hatch about 5 miles from me for $2.00 a dozen, I have one other...

Need some help, other forum directed me here.

Thanks a million for the great advice!!! It sounds like I need to wait a little longer on my next hatch to go to about 15 weeks with the current outside hatch. I have a combination on inside brooders that I use until they get too big. I only plan to hatch and eat from Spring to Fall, keeping my...

Need some help, other forum directed me here.

I have decided to grow some chickens to eat, I have a small incubator that holds 7 eggs so I will have no more than 7 chickens together at one time. I am going to build a temporary coop and run for them outside to house until they get to about 12 weeks (they will go out at about 4-5 weeks of...

Getting my Ovascope for candling today, any tidbits for use?

On my 2nd set of eggs for hatching, my first batch I tried candling with DIY candling aids, I would have told you based on candling pictures I looked at that I only had 2 eggs out of 7 that progressed. Wouldn't you know it, all 7 hatched as healthy as can be. Hence I said so much for my...

    Sexing Eggs Experiment

You know what is good about your test? The fact that you are interested in doing it and seem to be enjoying it. Nothing else matters and you (at the end of the day) will have done something you chose to do and got an answer to your question. Same negative responses could also be said for anyone...

What's in YOUR 'Bator Right Now???

7 Rhode Island Reds in my Brinsea Mini Advance. My 2nd hatch, just put them in yesterday, Sat. 2/19.

    This will not end well.

As a fellow engineer (Electrical) I bought a Brinsea after much studying. That make is absolutely rock solid, I can count on one hand where the temp. deviation got to 99.6 in my first and so far into my second hatch. I also have a styrofoam cooler from Omaha, I plan to make that into a bigger...

    Double egg?!?!?!?!?!

Not unusual for me, I have 5 hens, I check for eggs every morning. This being Sunday, I checked this morning and got 4, I cleaned out their nest boxes this afternoon about 3:00 pm and got 4 more, that is 8 in a 24 hour period. It is not unusual for me to get 5 per day.

Not drying good in the incubator

I have done 1 complete hatch so no expert by far. I have a Brinsea Mini Adavance which only holds 7 eggs. My first hatch is a little over 3 weeks old now and I still have 100% (all 7) really healthly looking chicks. Since my bator is fairly small, I actually took the chicks out at different...
