Switching out eggs from a broody

Update on Operation Egg Swap. I snatched the 6 eggs the hen was sitting on, last night. I replaced them with 8 different eggs. Today, I found two of the eggs broken and tossed out of the nest. I guess this girl can count. At least I hope those will be the only ones that she destroys.

Switching out eggs from a broody

I have her in "the love shack", a 3x4 hutch. The nest box is on the floor. I was hoping to put all 12 of the "new" eggs under her. Thanks for the help.

Switching out eggs from a broody

Tonight I'm going to try to take out the "mutt" eggs from under a broody hen who's been sitting on them for 2 days. I'm guessing that she has about 7 eggs under her. I want to place some other fertile eggs under her. Questions.... Do you think I can put more eggs under her than I take out...

    Banties and Standards together?

I do this and have no problems. The big hens are dominant over the bantam hens, but don't pick on them. The only roosters I have are bantams and they prefer the "big girls" which is just fine as far as the bantam hens are concerned.

Due the 22nd? Hatch with me!

My chicks were due to hatch on the 22nd but the first one popped out this evening (5/20). They are super tiny mixed breed bantams. I'm no expert but the dad looks like some kind of rosecomb and the moms are extreemly small, possibly from some fighting breed bantam.

    Help! Chicks hatching early

So I should leave them alone until all have hatched as long as it doesn't drag on past 3 days?

    Help! Chicks hatching early

Hi folks. This is my first hatch. I have 14 eggs that were due to hatch two days from now. I now have one chick out of the shell and one almost out. None of the other eggs seem even close. Do I take the hatched ones out or leave them in for a while. I don't want to mess up the...

    Recommended chicken genetics book?

I know I can get most of my answers here, but I like to have a book in front of me. I'm starting to breed bantams and would like to have a plan. Any suggestions?

I've run out of chick feed!

I'm sure someone will curse me for this, but my birds were raised on layer crumble. The local feed store got a shipment of chicks in but didn't have any starter feed. In fact, nobody on the island had any. One year later, my birds are fine, healthy, and lay tons of eggs.

Best beginner bator $200 or less?

Hi Folks. I'm having trouble getting my tabletops to sit on eggs so I'm resorting to incubating. I only have two of these hens so far, so I don't need a high capacity machine. I've seen Brinsea Eco 20 w/auto turner for $225 (shipping included). Are there other incubators better or the same...

    Introducing new roo to others.

My fowl are in a 4000 ft sq fenced area. I have two coops. One 4x8x6, 2 story and one 2x4x3. The new roo is about 9 months old and the tt's are well over 1 year.

    Introducing new roo to others.

They bloodied him up pretty good. I moved him to the brooder coop I usually keep my tt hens in. I'll keep him there alone for a week or so.

    Introducing new roo to others.

I just brought home a new Cuckoo Maran roo. I already have 3 "table top" (very small bantams) roos for 7 barnyard hens and 2 table top hens. I know, too many boys.... Anyways, I just let the CM out into the yard and he's gotten his butt handed to him and the tt's won't stop chasing him. So...

    Table Top?

Thanks for the replies. It makes sense that he's a fighting breed. Cock fighting is a big deal around here and some of my neighbors have stables. Nappy could definitely have a future as a fighter. He's calm around me and the hens, but if the big cock comes in the yard, he runs him off.

    Table Top?

He has a purple bar on his wings. His head/neck feathers (what do you call that) are slightly blonde. There is another one of these that visits my yard who's head/neck is almost white or silver.

    Table Top?

Any guesses about the breed? I call this little guy "Napoleon". He has successfully driven a full sized fighting cock from my yard. He's not tall enough for all of his girlfriends, though. A friend at work is going to give me a few "table top" hens for him, though. I'm guessing that...
