Yesterday I noticed that three of twelve of my 3 week old coturnix chicks have bald scaly patches on their backs. One of them, we noticed, smelled awful and today that same one has a crooked beak. Any idea what might be going on?
Some background: on June 2nd they started plucking feathers...
I priced the PVC to stack the cages and it was going to be WAY more expensive than buying cages with a stacking kit. I hate it when it is more expensive to build your own than buy prefab. It seems wrong.
We are getting along well, Bill! Thanks for asking! We had to move them to the basement as well as cull all the roo's but our hens are laying REALLY well, everyone seems happy, and we will be getting some hatching eggs from Quaillady soon to bring some breeders in. We are very happy so far. The...
Well, I don't have to worry about predators. Aside from my composting worms I have no other pets and, as I said before, the birds are kept in my house.
Anyone who uses stacking cages to house indoor coturnix, could you explain your system and who you bought them from or if you made them...
It is galvanized metal but I worry that with a 24X36X14 cage it will sag in the middle. I am planning on stacking them and I want them to be pretty sturdy. I want to avoid wood because of cleanup and odors since I am keeping them indoors.
Question: Is it really cheaper to build your own cages?
I am building rabbit-type quail cages but the hardware cloth I bought at Lowes seems flimsy. Where do you buy your cage making materials. I want to stack these but I am unsure how at the moment; suggestions appreciated.
Thanks! I remember seeing a website for someone who raised Jumbo Manchurians (goldens?); does that ring a bell with anyone? I really should write these things down!
My incubator is arriving today so I need to get my eggs ordered. In my current flock of hens I have a few tibetans (which I don't love) and Browns; I am interested in getting more color into my flock and SIZE! If you sell Jumbo coturnix could you PM me with your prices and colors? I will need...
I was having the same problem until I culled down to 1:6 with the least aggressive Roo in the bunch. Now everyone is MUCH happier though I have no idea with fertility and have only been doing this for 3 days.
The hen lost not only her head feathers but most of her neck feathers and many on her back! I am all for free love with quail but that was a little more than I could handle. Jumbo browns huh? I'd like some whites too; is there any disadvantage to them or just personal preference? I want to keep...
Yesterday we picked up 4 Coturnix chicks and 12 adults, tibetans and browns(?). We were supposed to get 3:9 ratio of males:females but ended up half and half. Those poor girls! They were miserable and one female, the smallest, looks pretty beat up so we isolated her and we are hoping for the...
We got our quail! I am suspicious that the 3 roo's and 9 hen's that we got are actually 9 roo's and 3 hen's but I haven't had time to check what with dealing with the brooder chicks.
Problem: One of the hens got injured during transport and cut the bottom of her foot which she was favoring and...
We found a breeder in the area with a cage we can buy and we will be getting 4 chicks and 12 adults TONIGHT! The adults are "several" months old so we may not have them for long but the guy says that they are still laying. Oh my goodness I need to set up a brooder! What else will I need to get?!

My plan to deal with that was the pull out trays and pine shavings, baking soda and composting their bedding every other day. I know the ammonia smell can get pretty strong but is there another smell I need to be wary about? How many birds is a "large number"? Would the well ventilated...
