Starting an Egg Only CSA? Management? Anyone know of an existing model?

Hello, I have been a chicken owner at my own residence for many years. I recently was introduced to someone in my community who is a part owner of a 13 acre farm in the city. She is wanting to start developing the property and include community members in those efforts. There are currently a...

My chicks are on a diet ... they won't eat treats!

Try some spaghetti noodles! I fed these to the younger chicks and they thought they were worms and couldn't get enough. At 1 month, you could also try some smaller meal worms. Introduce them to "live" food. That won't take long for them to devour! Good luck! Marva

Miss Prissy, You are too much! A Farmette! Very cool! Thanks for the suggestion! Someday I hope to have a larger property where I can have a "real" farm! Saving my money and dreaming right now! Thanks, Marva

To bag or not to bag it's head during butchering?

My dear BF and I have a dilemna as to how to kill a meat bird. I have killed and processed a turkey and a young rooster earlier this spring. My brother-in-law helped me. I held down the body and my brother-in-law streteched the neck of the bird out and chopped it off with an axe. It was not...

How long until turn off bator? Day 23....24....25?

They are all dead, fully developed. From the look of it, they stopped developing just a day or so ago. Maybe they did not adjust to the higher humidity? They were so close. I wonder why they did not make it? It is so sad and frustrating at the same time. Hoping I can figure out what went...

How long until turn off bator? Day 23....24....25?

How long do you typically wait after a hatch to determine when it is time to turn off the bator. I am on day 22 and still have 4 really good potential eggs to hatch yet.

4 silver button quail + 1 lonely little blue andalusian - Day 22

I did candle yesterday and looked liek we have 4 chicks inside and one egg with a good airsac, then maybe a partially developed chick, and the bottom third of the egg is clear. I think we have a potential for 4 more chicks, unless they died inside the eggs just before hatching. I would be so...

4 silver button quail + 1 lonely little blue andalusian - Day 22

Actually, I held the button quail eggs back 3 days or so, to insure they would be hatching near the chicks. I rotated them several times a day until placed on the automatic turner with the chicken eggs. I used 1/2 of a plastic easter egg lined with some cotton to hold the quail eggs in the...

I candeled on day 14 and...

    Can Chickens Taste their food?

I know my girls have prefrences like hard boiled eggs, etc. They also go for things like worms when offered two or more choices. This brings to mind are their choices/prefrences based on color of the food alone or a combination of color and taste? A curious mind, Marva

    Any City Slickers???

You are not alone with chickens in the city. I live in a suburb of Denver and have a dozen chickens now living in my backyard in an enclosed area north of my garage. It is shielded from the neighhbor's by a wooden fence (also keeps his dog from seeing and barking at the chickens), I have lots...

What to do with my new Tom Turkey (Bronze)

This evening, I picked up 4 beautiful BO's from a local woman who will be moving back into the city and can no longer keep her hens. They are really pretty and I look forward to some fresh eggs soon! Yumm! My 9-12 week olds will not be laying for some time and this will be an early treat for...

    Egg layers wanted in Colorado

Are you still looking for some laying hens? I am "adopting" 4 buff orpingtons that are 1 year old or so from a woman who is moving to the "city" and will no longer be able to keep them. I will be going to pick them up tomorrow evening in Longmont. I already have 12 pullets and 1 rooster (will...
