    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

My daughter turned our silkie eggs up to 107 while I was at work becasue she saw the light turn off and thought the machine was off...It was like that for 5-6 hours. This happened on day 4. As we speak, they are pipping...several have already hatched. The only eggs that didn't develop weren't...

    Intervention: Helping Your Chicks Hatch

Hi all..I have a chick that pipped on the wrong end late on day 20 here...I accidentally put the egg the wrong side up, as it was a super dark marans egg and very roundish...I think I discovered my mistake and corrected it halfway through. Anyhow, I helped make the hole a little bigger so the...

    Silkie thread!

Ok..I used a little clear "hard as nails" polish and then where the "indent" is, I put a teeny piece of tape...Chick is moving a little and veining looks intact....Now the hard part...waiting and keeping the bator closed.

    Silkie thread!

I was keeping the humidity at 55% during the first 18 days and was planning on raising it now for lock down. I always wondered why exactly we are supposed to keep it humid when a mother hen doesn't have water bowls set up everywhere. Should I increase humidity now or leave it around 55%? Some of...

    Silkie thread!

Oh my gosh, I screwed up :( I just went to candle them for last time before locked down and cracked one on accident. The membrane did not rupture as far as I can tell. Should I just leave it cracked side up? Anything else I should do? Wrap in damp paper towel?

    Silkie thread!

sorry to "butt in" but can you tell me the advantages of using the dry incubator method? I have 11 silkie eggs in the bator now(so far I am at 100% "hatch rate") and it is day 18...getting ready to put them on lock down. I realize that all of them prob. wont make it but one can hope! The only...

8+ SQ White Silkie Hatching Eggs

Hi, I am interested in purchasing these for week of 10/12 if possible. I just purchased a new brinsea incubator and am finishing up my "practice" run with my flockers eggs. They are set to hatch 10/10, so anytime after that would be great. I really would like to add some of your beautiful babes...

Please help...paralysis in 5 month old newly laying pullet!

No...same thing I thought at first, but her crop is pretty much empty. It really seems to be just her neck...Her reflexes seem good..her toes warp my finger when I push them. I was trying to feel her neck, and she did cry out a little, so I am sure its painful. Im giving her the poly-v-sol and...

Please help...paralysis in 5 month old newly laying pullet!

I discovered a couple days ago, one of our white rock pullets looking kind of "fluffy". I would think coccidia, but I had just (6 days ago) taken several fecal samples in to the Vet(we do every 6 months) and all were clean for parasites/etc. ' I put her in the chicken infirmary as I call it, in...

Predator attacks after 2 years of peaceful chicken raising(warning GRAPHIC Photos)

I have been leaving my great dane out more with the chickens...she is pretty good for the most part, though sometimes she will chase a little. This hawk did infact try to carry off one of my full nearly grown black austrolops...I found the original kill site, and then the body 100 feet...

Predator attacks after 2 years of peaceful chicken raising(warning GRAPHIC Photos)

Well we have confirmation that it is a hawk/raptor problem. After spending a bunch of time, criss-crossing fishing wire/line, hanging CDs, installing expensive owls that coo with rotating heads and playing country music from dawn till dusk, we lost another hen. This time it was my sweet girl...

Predator attacks after 2 years of peaceful chicken raising(warning GRAPHIC Photos)

Thanks guys. Husband was up late, tying up fishing wire across the entire fenced area...also used some bright yellow "johnny ball" rope and tied some cds up. Read that helps. Sucks that we cant let them free range. One thing I am not certain of... Our rooster "Thumper"( a huge cuckoo marans) was...

Predator attacks after 2 years of peaceful chicken raising(warning GRAPHIC Photos)

Hello everyone, I am very sad to report that I have lost 2 young pullets(age 5 months) in the last few weeks. One had just started laying and the other was due anyday. I am trying to determine what kind of predator did this and learn ways to help prevent this in the future. A little background...

Hello all, So my leghorn pullets have begun laying...only problem is I am pretty sure they are laying cream colored eggs! They have been "squatting" for a week now when I reach out towards them, and they have nice red combs/wattles and wide bottoms. I do have have other pullets out there but...
