    Guinea laying question

We have two guineas that are laying; one lays brown eggs, the other white eggs. I can't for the life of me figure out which is laying which eggs - one is a lavender and the other is a pearl - anyone know which would lay which egg? They both started laying, the brown egg layer about 2 weeks ago...

    Roosters? ... what breed?

We have two of these guys. We think they're roosters because they look totally different than any of the other chicks. But they don't have spurs (they're 6 weeks old). Anyone know what breed? Exchequer leghorn? Ancona?

What do you feed treats in?

We have hanging water and grain feeders in the chicken coop, but I am not sure what to put treats/kitchen scraps in for the chickens. I am trying to keep everything off the ground so i don't want to just toss it in there. i was thinking about the metal feeder trough ... any ideas?

*Sniff, sniff* They're not babies anymore

We moved the chicks out to the barn/coop this morning. They were flying and jumping around like crazy - I think they like their new digs (and having so much more room!) The only thing we don't have yet is the nesting boxes. The chicks are 8 weeks old - hopefully we'll get the nest...

    Angora rabbits

I have had rabbits my entire adult life, right up until now, when we actually live on a farm, lol. So I have to remedy that, of course! In keeping with our mission to only have animals that have a purpose (other than being cute), I'm going with angoras. I met a breeder at CT Sheep & Wool last...

    Deep layer method + coops

Our first flock of chicks will be going outside in a few weeks to their new coop. We have a large 6 stall barn and we are adapting 1-2 of the stalls to be used as the chicken coop. My question is for those of you who use the deep layer method - does anyone use this method in a coop that you...

    Narrowing down breeds

After another thread on here, pics on facebook, lots of googling, and going through every pic of every breed of chicken the hatchery offers, i think i have this narrowed down at least somewhat Chick #1 - Appenzeller Spitzhauben - it is the only breed that looks even remotely like it on the...

    Lights on or off?

The chicks are in two brooders in the boiler room. There are no windows in the room. They obviously have their heat lamps on, but should i leave the room lights on all day and off all night, or on part of the day/off part of the day?

Let's play ... name that chick!

Our chicks arrived this morning I have been looking at pics all morning on the internet and am at a loss as to what we have, lol. Can anyone help identify these breeds? They are from the Meyer Hatchery rainbow layers assortment, if that's any help (it hasn't been a help to me!) Chick #1 - we...

    They're here!!!

24 out of 25 survived the trip. They are happily peeping away in the boiler room. I don't know how I am going to be bale to get any work done today (I work from home and my studio is next to the boiler room) because all I want to do is play with them! I have to spend some time this...

    Favorie books?

What are your favorite backyard chicken/small farm chicken/raising chicken books? I am a *bit* obsessive about things and have been reading everything I can get my hands on lately, but am always looking for new recommendations. So far, my hands down favorite book has been "Chick Days".

    How many chicks?

We're just starting in this whole raising chicks thing. How many chicks did you all start out with for a backyard/small farm? We are starting with 25, which may be over-doing it just a little, lol.
