When to move babies outside? Having a mental break down. :)

They might not like being in the dark (not knowing your set up). Putting the light in there was a good move.

    Cleaning Routine Brooder and Beyond

This is my second batch of chicks in 5 years, so I don't have a ton of advice. However I have just move my 26 2-weekers into their second and hopefully last brooder. It's my old coop run that i brought indoors, placed on cardboard, and tarp, and have it pushed to the wall on the open side. On...

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

Hi there! Please call mcmurray as soon as they open tomorrow! I can tell you that when I picked up my chicks on bellmawr this afternoon, the postal worker told me that there was a mix up in philly and Virginia's shipment of chicks had been sent to Philly then their post office. So she sent them...

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

Well my wait is over! McMurray was fantastic and they arrived at the regional post office this morning. By 0800 (Sunday!) They had called to ask me to pick them up. I had no idea they had even shipped! Ordered 25 rainbow layers. Received 24 live, one dead. I'm very new to chick rearing, as this...

    Chick Loss

Ugh, I have 25 expected to ship from McMurray on Monday, and I hope they have figured out why customers are calling with so many losses recently. I am sorry for your losses and I hope they ship more out to asap. That's certainly not an experience we want to go through. Snow is expected here...

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

Hopefully Monday or Tuesday, receiving 25 or so Rainbow Layer assortment of pullets from McMurray. I last ordered with them 5 years ago and had a lovely experience with only two perishing in the process. I hope for a similar success rate!

cowering, and now trying to sleep on the top of the coop

I'm going to boost this up again and ask for more help if I may. The cowering I'm not so worried about, but again today, at 5:15 EST they were in the dusk, sitting on top of the coop (6ft in the air) cooing and talking to me, as if settling in for the night. It was 39 degrees, with a forecast...

cowering, and now trying to sleep on the top of the coop

Hi all, I'm a proud mom to 2 EE's and 2 RIW's, all ladies about 30 wks, who have been giving me 1-2 eggs/day. They're starting to slow down now and I have questions about 2 behaviors. One RIW will taunt me when I'm walking around, squawk to let out of the pen (they're out a few hours most...

    Sleeping in Nest Boxes

see my post recently about putting pizza box lids in the roosts--mine got the picture that they were "closed" at night but open during the day for laying. Takes some work to be consistent with putting them in there and taking them out in the morning but it worked for me.

questions about poop in the lay boxes and more

Hi all, here's an update about my poopy nest boxes. After considering all my options (moving them when they get in there at night, putting a football in there, etc...), I noticed a pizza box in my recycling one night. I got it, tore it in half, and I wedged one side in the right next box and...

Oyster shell to encourage immature hens to lay?

Well I just got my ameracaunas and rhode island whites to start laying this week (they are about 26 weeks). I told them last weekend it's time to make some eggs and within a few days they had it down. I get 0-2 eggs per day and they are laid after lunch some time. So try having "the talk" with...

No green or blue for me.

Well, I have 2 RIW's and 2 EE's, all about 23 wks and none are laying, so it's a relief to hear that some are getting their first eggs later. the ladies are noisy now and pesky, nipping at me and want to run! They hate being penned most of the day but I have to keep them in most of the day and...

questions about poop in the lay boxes and more

OHH, I love your new ideas--a football in the boxes!! so great, and i dread going out there every night for 2 weeks but I think that'll be most effective. I don't like when they peck at me when I try to pick them up at n ight. Jen

questions about poop in the lay boxes and more

well thanks for all the helpful replies. I started filling up the nest boxes up to the top of the front edge with wood chips, hopefully do decrease sleeping in there, but they are still pooping it up. I don't think I want to go in there and remove them from the box while sleeping, since I...

    Heartbroken Mommie

Next time buy sexed chicks if you want pullets--i paid a little more and got some females from Ideal, and the experience was very positive. As for attacking you, perhaps as one did it, the others copied him. My pullets are very copy-cat and when one goes for something, the others do the same.

questions about poop in the lay boxes and more

Hi all, my 4 girls should be laying in the next few weeks and are starting to act funny. They sleep either in the next boxes or on the rim of them, and they prefer to poop in the boxes, leaving me with a little mess to stir around or scoop out. Will they lay in the boxes after using it as a...

What to do in the rain?

Well, it's raining, and they're out in it. I had my husband prop open the door w/the ladder last night since there aren't any ventilation holes drilled yet, and I've been leaving the door open at night (they do go in by themselves at dark and seem to stay there). BUT somehow they managed to...

What to do in the rain?

Not sure where to post this, but I'll try here... I have just put out our 4 5-weekers and they are enjoying the grazing in an enclosed pen 3x4 ft and their coop. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, and do I just keep them in w/ the door closed, or keep the door open so they can venture out? I'm...
