DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

I dont have any pics, but i took the mesh off a large trampoline and used it to cover part of my chicken run. It provides awesome shade but its breathable and doesn't collect water. So my run looks a bit like a circus tent but the birds love it .

Soo proud of my daughter and her chickens

My daughter showed her chickens this weekend at the fair (4H). They were all in pretty rough shape due to molting, but she still ended up with Reserve Grand Champion in Beginner Showmanship! Her rooster got 4th in the crowing contest and 3rd in his class. Her 1 dozen colored eggs got 3rd in...

loss of feathers for months and bottom are featherless and red

Mine look the same. Especially my barred rocks and rhode island reds. Bald red butts. Nasty. They don't have mites, I've checked and dusted. I know the rooster is pretty aggressive, I assume that has something to do with it.

    Paralysis

I have a friend with a 3 month old phoenix rooster who suddenly can't walk. He can flap his wings, move his toes, but has no grip, and cannot stand up at all. He eats and drinks and is alert, but just lays there not moving. They've quarantined him from the flock, but aren't sure he's gonna...

    Whats up chicken butt?

No unfortunately they are not working. I've actually watched them pluck each other. Ugh, I guess separation is the next step.

    Broodiness

Ok this is probably a really stupid questions, but is there a way to "trigger" broodiness in a hen? My girls are a year old and only 1 of the RIR girls has shown any sign of broodiness. She'll sit on the nest and get all fussy with me when I take the eggs, but even when I leave the eggs there...

    Bald Red Butts

Most of my flock looks similar. Mostly right above the tail. I bought a hen saddle to try, and pinless peepers. So far its been a month and I can't see much of a change. I even peeped the rooster. I don't know if they're plucking each other or if the roo is just to rough on them. I'm going to...

    Bye bye my beautiful Cherry

My blue andulusian Cherry flew the coop a couple days ago. Somehow the flock escaped and she never returned with the rest. I've searched high and low but I assume the coyotes got her. :(

    Peepers....any special treatment?

LOL, I let mine out to free range yesterday and they did fine. They look funny though. I haven't been able to determine the offender so they all have them..even the rooster. Seem to be helping. Very worth it! Thanks! Andrea

    Peepers....any special treatment?

Really? Nobody has used peepers/blinders before?

    Peepers....any special treatment?

So I just outfitted my girls with pinless peepers because they've been plucking each other all winter. Alls well so far, but do I need to do any special feeding arrangements while they have their peepers on? Or can they eat out of the feeder ok? Also is it ok to let them out to free range with...

We're the McClennings: Nathan, Andrea, Brooke & Brayden We live in south central Montana with our 10 chickens, 1 whippet, 1 gerbil, and we will soon be adding a 4H lamb, and a couple alpacas. Peepers just seem cruel...

Thank you. Ill make a point to observe them for awhile. Are you talking about the pinless peepers? The ones I bought have a pin that goes thru them.

    Peepers just seem cruel...

Thanks. I do hate seeing naked backs. I wondered if I had ordered the wrong size. The blinder seems correct, but the pin seems too big. Ill try warming them. So does their nostril naturally go all the way thru or is there cartilage the pin goes thru? Im not even sure which hens are the offenders.

    Peepers just seem cruel...

I ordered peepers for my flock and tried putting them on. I couldnt do it. It seemed to hurt the one hen I tried. Doesnt it seem cruel to shove a post thru their nostrils? Perhaps im doing it wrong. Any thoughts?

Oh and I keep the water inside the coop.

Extreme Cold (below zero) winter poultry care??

Im in Montana. Havent had many below zero days, but a few. My coop is insulated, and I use deep litter too. Also under the coop is open for the chickens so I stack straw bales around for a little extra insulation. I have a heat lamp in the coop too, and when its negative temps, I have a heater...
