That is a welsummer. But I know that Easter eggers have similar markings, so it might be that, too!

Buying new chicks on Friday, what should I get?

Our local farm supply store has a great variety of chicken breeds this year. I have 12 chickens right now, the oldest in the flock are 3 years old. I'm going to be getting rid of 6, and I want to replace them with some different breeds. Here's what I have so far (the * indicates they are getting...

    New Fence/Pasture Construction

We aren't going to add anything else at the bottom. They only free range during the day, and their coop is very secure. I haven't seen any evidence of predators, so I think we're okay. At least, they've been okay for 2 years without a fence! :)

    New Fence/Pasture Construction

My husband and I have been talking about putting up a fence to create a pasture area, and a place where we can safely let the chickens roam. We finally got started this weekend! I'm so excited, I wanted to share our progress. The posts are in the ground. Supports and bottom layer of...

    Sand in coop

We just bought a house that had an old coop out back (built probably around 1910 or so). It used to house pigeons, but we're putting our chickens in it. Currently, it just has a cement floor with some wood shavings that I've thrown down for the chickens. But, I'm wondering if sand wouldn't be a...

Holy Geez! Ideal is sold out of brown egg layers until when???

Ack! You're post had me all nervous. But, I'm doing a special order through my feed store, so maybe they'll still have the ones I want? I'm ordering 3 Welsummers and 3 Buff Orphingtons.

I'm getting baby chicks!!!! :D When should I order them?

I just went to my feed store and placed an order. I did want some rare breeds, but they just order them the same time as the rest of their orders. It's definitely a better deal than ordering online, especially if you don't want any super special breeds. Good luck!

What breed is are these black and white hens?

I got some chickens from a family that no longer wanted to care for theirs. I know I have 2 easter eggers, 2 red stars, but, I'm not sure about the black and white ones. Any ideas?

    Giving week old chicks bugs

I've got a stink bug outside my back porch. Can I stick him in with my new chicks or are they too young? They are a week old today.

I picked up my first ever baby chicks today. They are about the cutest things I've ever seen. I got three easter eggers and two sexlinks. This is Ghost: And this is Chippy: The rest are unnamed: They are fun. So far no poopy butts, and the temp seems to be good. But I can't help...

    Critique my brooder

Frankly, the reason there aren't pine shavings in there is because I forgot to buy some at IFA. But, we'll see how the towel works, and I can definitely move to something else later. Moving the food and water to the other side of the cage is a good idea, I'll do that. terrilhb, I'm not...

    Critique my brooder

Quote: A snake?! That's awful! The brooder will be inside at all times. No predators getting there. (I hope!)
