How I built my hatcher:
Well, I started by fighting off the raccoons and snagging a few styrofoam fish-shipping boxes from the dumpster behind PetSmart. :) It was dark, and I could reach four boxes and lids without actually climbing the dumpster, so I brought home four. Extras!into
I...
I got my phone call! I got my phone call! Poor Impress, I called her from my driveway and made her talk to me all the way to the post office. Then called her back as soon as I got back in the van, because I had this:
The third box was in perfect condition. My mailman walked out the...
So, then ... hmmm. This would also cool the eggs to the 50* or so that you're supposed to store at while you're saving up a clutch. And keep turning them for you at the same time.
Intrrrrrrrrrrrrresting. Very very intrrrrrrrrrrresting.
Yeah - the main consensus I've seen on here is humidity in the 40s for the first 18, around 65% for lockdown. And decrease the surface area of the water in the trays to decrease the humidity.
But - at the same time, keep an eye on the egg weights to make sure you're losing enough water...
... Post office should be calling me about my egg shipment any minute. As it turns out, a watched phone never rings. Tap-tap-tap. Somebody call me and make sure my phone's working?
Sine I asked to have my username chafed from laniered a couple of weeks ago, I have problems replying to private messages. When I click reply, it defaults to sending the message to my old username, not to the user I actually want to talk to. This happens on both my pc and my iPad, so on...
So, what percentage of bleach do you use? (sez the girl with ... erm ... 3doz eggs coming next week, plus more, maybe, and who is not opposed to increasing her hatch rate)
Here go.
I kind of wish I had looked for 1/8" - it would be easier to dial down the drip rate. I may check to see if they have it, next time I go in. Which, you know, since I need to build another coop, will be pretty soon.
Ha. Yes.
Go to Lowes or Home Depot and go to plumbing, and get some 1/4" plastic line and a screw-in quick connect to fit it, and a valve. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of a white plastic bucket - but you could use your milk jug - and then slipped a small gasket onto the screw-in...
I watched it. My husband - who does not (:gasp:) particularly like chickens watched it. We both loved it.
And I shared it on facebook. I have some chicken-lovin' friends who will enjoy it as wall.
Thank you for sharing!
I'm officially playing with silkies.
Got some eggs from kentuckysilkies, and had hatching last weekend! Please pardon the baby overload -
So, help me here. Is this white or buff?
Then, I guess these two are splash?
And these darker ones - partridge? -ish?
That last one...
Oh - and you're going to need to fit a wicking source of moisture in there near your thermostat, too, for your humidity - so if you can back all that up closer to the fan to make room, it'll work better.
You need heat sinks, yes - sealed jars or bottles of water, or rocks, or both. Air is a horrible conductor of heat, and looses the heat far too quickly, so if you can fill up some of the air space with something that actually stores heat well, you'll be much better off.
And you need to drill a...
Yes, blow the air past the bulb onto the thermostat. And I have my thermostat facing the other way, so that I can access the adjustment for fine tuning.
What size bulb do you have in there again? If you think about it, a super high wattage is going to cycle faster, because of the increased...
