    Misshapen eggs - ridges

Hi guys, All is well with our flock of ex-bats who we adopted a few months ago. They're healthy, well-feathered and laying like champions. No one has any symptoms that I can speak of but one of the girls is laying some funky looking eggs with very pronounced ridges along them. Has...

    Ex battery hens not laying

Just wanted to leave an update for anyone who might have read this. We are now consistently receiving 6 or 7 eggs a day from our 8 girls. I can only come to the conclusion that they were indeed resting and recuperating. :)

Thanks for your review. So glad to hear your girl survived and made her way back home.

    Ex battery hens not laying

The two eggs we've been receiving for the past 3 days have all been left in the nesting boxes. (Well, box - they much prefer the one at the back of the coop and the front one seems only to be used at bedtime by the hen at the bottom of the pecking order as she isn't allowed to roost.) Before...

    Ex battery hens not laying

I don't think I'd feel right doing that. They've just got used to having some nice space for the first time in their lives so it seems cruel to stuff them all away in a box again. The laying does seem to be on the up again. We're now back up to 2 eggs a day, and have been for the last 3 days.

    Ex battery hens not laying

They do free range in half of our garden. I've been able to find all the eggs they've been laying so far. Some are still laying outside but others use the nest boxes well. It's the sudden and dramatic nature of the decline that has me asking questions. I'm fairly confident that I'm doing...

    Ex battery hens not laying

Hi everyone. After years of wanting them, we finally have chickens! We adopted 8 ex-battery hens last weekend and they seem to be in generally good health. They're foraging happily, eating and drinking well, and their combs are coming up much brighter. The one problem is that they've gone almost...

I stumbled upon chickens, really. I began growing vegetables and herbs a couple of months ago as I was really getting into my cooking at the time, and it was something to do. When looking for an answer as to whether store-bought pepper seeds would yield fruit I came across the online diary of a...

    Ex-battery hens, Hull, East Yorkshire

Thank you. If it makes you feel any better I'm a city dweller, not living out in the country. My boyfriend's family lives out in the country though and boy do I resent that! I was not a happy bunny when we went to visit his dad yesterday and heard a cockerel crowing in the neighbour's garden.

    Ex-battery hens, Hull, East Yorkshire

I'm looking to buy a few hens for my back garden and would like to rescue some ex-bats. I am aware of organisations like the BHWT but there aren't any rescue dates imminent and I'd like to be able to get hold of them asap. I dropped in at Smith's Hatchery on the way to Hedon yesterday and they...

Scaly leg mite in aviary flock

Poor Peggy. Does she get around well enough with all those missing toes? Seeing the state of her makes me even more determined to do something for those aviary birds. Call me pessimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if nothing was done for the poor chickens. The woman I spoke to, while nice...

Scaly leg mite in aviary flock

To Miss Lydia: Thanks for the kind words. I've been making a real effort to learn all I can because I want to be a responsible carer for these animals. I'm just grateful for my good memory because I'm learning for two - my boyfriend's a big animal lover but he's not yet got past his excitement...

Scaly leg mite in aviary flock

I don't have my own flock yet but might possibly have a house suitable for one in a few months. If I did manage to introduce anything to my own birds wouldn't it just be a matter of using the same treatments and preventatives on them? Would treating scaly leg mite in the aviary birds aggravate...

    treats and scraps

On the subject of greens; are the leaves of home-grown carrots any good for chicks? They seem like they'd be easy to eat due to their soft fronds but I don't have a clue when it comes to their nutritional value.

    Hi from SW France

Welcome to the forum. I only signed up a couple of days ago but I wanted to wish you as good a start to the forum as I feel I'm having. I also wanted to let you know just how jealous I am that you're living in patisserie-filled Southern France and with a flock of chickens to boot!

Scaly leg mite in aviary flock

I went to the aviary the next day and spoke to one of the keepers. I told her what it was that was wrong with the birds (she thought it was just age) and told her that dipping them in vegetable oil was the way to go. She said they'd get some and sort it and gave me a number to ring if I wanted...

Hatch an egg in a hurry

It doesn't matter now. I've decided that me and my bf are going to eat it along with our tea tonight, to see what a really farm-fresh free range egg tastes like. I wasn't being entirely rational last night - after having a contract fall through on us for a house where we had planned to raise...

Hatch an egg in a hurry

I am currently in possession of a fertile chicken egg and would like to try to hatch it rather than eat it. I can't afford an incubator after buying a car last week - the last of my spare money is going on insurance - so I need a solution that won't cost me anything, if that's possible. If...

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone. It's nice to instantly feel a part of a very friendly and active community. I've spent most of the evening reading through health threads and I'm amazed at how much knowledge everyone has to offer. Thanks to this site I'm really starting to feel like I...

Scaly leg mite in aviary flock

Thank you very much for your reply Miss Lydia. I'll sit down to read that thread after I've picked up my boyfriend from work and we've had our tea. I'm sure we'll be able to sort something out if we put our heads together. Thank you for letting me know of welsharon's similar endeavour too - I'm...
