Just A Bit About My Family & I:
My name is Tanya Davis, and this is my family (above from left). My husband Phil, 4 year old daughter Olivia, and my 2 year old son Oliver. One day we decided that we needed to do something that made US happy, thus the trip to the state we've only dreamed of...
Thinking back on the whole process, I'm just not sure now if I had ruptured the bile sack ... I don't think I did, but seeing as I didn't know what I was really doing and was quickly learning while doing (not the best method with cleaning chickens), it is very possible. I'm very sure the...
@ Tracydr: I thought that was the problem, I could taste the smell long after trashing the bird, I SHOULD have gone with my gut feeling on that one, but with a combination of stupid things I trudged on. Rediculous and a no brainer I know, believe me I kicked myself pretty good on that one for a...
Thank you for your feedback, I knew I should have done something other than let it sit on the counter, even with hub's insistence. I thought the bird had a funny smell before cooking, but I didn't think the smell was really repulsive until it started cooking. You are right though, I should have...
Thank you for your quick reply. I am pretty certain that I had completely removed the kidneys and the lungs. I had repeatedly scraped the cavity until nothing else came out, and even looked several times inside to be sure nothing was left. The gall bladder I am not so sure if I noticed it when...
This is embarrassing, but please bear with me as I tell this. I am highly dissapointed in our first time processing chickens for our lack of knowledge, the stupidity of not researching better, and allowing this spur of the moment butchering to occur, from the result of a chicken-angered husband...
Just witness my 5 week old RIR dust bathing in the shavings a few days ago, it was absolutely THE most cutest thing and funniest, I have seen my chicks do thus far!! Here is are two pics of the cuteness:
This is my RIR having a dust bath and thoroughly enjoying it! My smallest BO and BBR are...

: Iaso have a crazy peeping girly (just shy of 4 wks old now), and have always found that the brooder crate was in need of something when I check. Be it an empty food dish, shaving stuffed waterer, spilled water in the shavings or the crate's bedding is ready to be changed (which is...
I'm new to the chicken scene myself, I've got 5 almost 3 week old chicks that live in my dining room right now and they are wonderful to have a round. We will start on a tractor coop this weekend. We too have wanted to be self reliant and teach our kids where food really comes from, and we are...
Thanks, I'm trying my best to take good care of them. This weekend we are going to start building the tractor coop! I'm SO excited to get this project rolling, we went to the town dump and picked up a really nice window for the coop. Will be going back again soon to find some more nice things to...
@ChurkLover: They are eating Purina Start & Grow (Medicated which I bought myself and non-medicated-which is the first bag I recieved free with the chicks). Their bedding is Drynest Pine Shavings, and they are using a metal feeder for their food and a self-watering dispenser, both of which I...
I'm completely new to chickens and I have 6 almost two week old chicks, just noticed yesterday night, that there are dark and tarry brownish red droppings in their crate! I'm not sure if it's coming from only one chick or more than one, and am worried about their health. Watching them, nothing...
Hello ya'll hailing from Libby! Moved here 3rd of May and am new to the whole chicken scene and am just loving it! Anyone live around here? I've got 5 chicks~3 Buff Orpingtons, 1 RIR, and 1 BBPR. If you want to see them, there are a few pics on my starting page. We've just put in a garden this...
Hi there, from Libby, Montana! I'm new to the whole chicken scene. Raising 5 chicks for my first flock, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Black Barred Rock, and 3 Buff Orpingtons. So far, I'm loving it!We started thinking about getting chickens for eggs and later meat, then our landlord brought us the 3...
Wow! I'm new to BYC too, and new to owning chickens. I just got 5 chickens a few days ago. I never had the chance to grow up around chickens and never knew how smart they could be, that's really neat that your chicken is so smart! I never knew you could teach chickens to swim! I honestly didn't...
Hi there! New here too, actually new to the whole chicken thing. I've never heard of a battery hen, until mac in abilene and gryeyes explained it in your reply postings, thanks guys! So, are you rescuing one ore are you just thinking about it? Are you keeping chickens for pets, eggs, food?
Hi, sorry about your missing chickens, hope you find the culprit. Try some electric wire along the top and bottom on the outsides of the fence, may help with your thief.
Just got some chicks a few days ago, for eggs and meat. This is my very first flock with 3 Buff Orpingtons, 1 Rhode Island Red, and 1 Black Barred Plymouth Rock (my 4yr. old daughters' favorite), all VERY cute chicks. Really looking forward to those tasty fresh eggs! They are all nice and cozy...
