I would like to get a couple of chicks for my broody. I missed the Summer swap....and am just about to do an order from mpc cause I can't find any around here.....I would be interested in POLISH (especially bantam frizzled or laced..... but I would consider lf and/or regular feathered) )and...
She started laying this Feb or March....a friend suggested to me today that perhaps because we had a cool spring she is just know losing her winter feathers??? This is the first I have heard of this,,,is that a possiblity?
I am curious...How do they compare as egg layers. Size, frequency, broodiness..?. Part of the reason I am wondering is that I have a couple of silkies that are great layers..with occasional bouts of broodiness...(after all who doesn't get broody sometimes... but I need to replace two...
I know that I don't have much info. She seemed fine to me last night. When we woke up this morning she was dead on the floor of the hen house. What should I look for to determine cause of death and what should I do to protect other girls. She had no visible injuries. Didn't act sick. When...
I know this sounds silly. But I have watched my chickens and I just don't get it. I come out and they come running up to me. So they must think I have food. I throw something down and they either eat it or act like it is invisible. The stuff they ignore they don't examine, peck at, smell...
The chickens love to lay their eggs in Wilbur the pot bellied pigs house. I have been worried because he is so much bigger than they are...but they have seemed fine...running all over him...one of my silkies has set up her broody camp for the last week...but yesterday I found my poor...
I have been getting normal sized eggs for about six weeks from most of not all of my seven hens...not really sure who is laying what. But they have all been the expected size or greater. I just found two eggs next to each other. One is about the size of a walnut and is perfect except it has...
I have heard that you shouldn't let silkies hatch ducks. If I recall the feathers on the feet can strangle the ducklings. Does anyone know if this is just upon hatch? Could I try putting some day olds under her in a few weeks?
Being a first time chicken mama I heard that that you should put golf balls or fake eggs out to let the chickens know where they should lay the eggs. I should have known that they would know where to lay....
1. In the middle of the yard.
2. In the pot of my Meyer lemon tree.
3. In the pig...
I think about 25% of them hatch tuftless...so I am not sure that indicates mixed breed...but I have wondered about the comb. I am not sure if a certain percentage don't lay blue egg. But the comb and the egg color together might mean mixed..
Well...I wasn't really planning to stop feeding them everything except the bread. I just saw it on craigslist and was wondering if it would work as an addition to feed, scraps, and free ranging. I am not sure what to say about the fact that you have common sense other than Congratulations...
They have been laying for less than a month and they are already branching out.
1. Pot belly pig house - 7 eggs so far
2. Meyer lemon tree in a pot...1 egg from the Polish girl so far...
If she has a single comb and is really laying brown eggs I guess she must have some mix in her somewhere... They are both rumpless. Her sister has the correct comb but no tufts. She is tufted with the wrong comb. Her sister is definitely laying blue eggs. I don't know much about there...
I am starting to suspect it is my Araucana with the single comb. She was huddled in the pb pig house and I found a larger brown egg in the spot she was laying. They seem to have adopted his house as a place to lay. I have found seven eggs so far...just hope he doesn't lay on one....
