    Best dog kennel coop design

The chickens are fine-the door to the coop closes automatically when it gets dark, and the possums have never been spotted in the daytime. Has reinforced the value of a secure coop, even inside the kennel!

    Best dog kennel coop design

We have our coop inside a wire dog kennel, anchored with hardware cloth buried around the perimeter and up the sides about a foot everywhere except the door. Have added hardware cloth on top underneath the canopy cover for added security, and feel it is pretty secure, especially with the...

Cold weather preparations for chickens and broody hen

If you have some oatmeal or cornmeal you could mix them with a little water, or bread, scrambled eggs and cooked rice would all work in an emergency for feed. It's been near and below zero here, too, but at least we've not had ice to deal with also! Good luck with your new little ones! Chicks...

Cold weather preparations for chickens and broody hen

I'm glad you have the room to keep her anyway. I have a cochin that goes broody all the time, but she is the sweetest too! We have no roosters so her effort will always be in vain, and she's cranky when broody, so I always break her of it as soon as I notice. Wouldn't be happy if I had a whole...

Cold weather preparations for chickens and broody hen

If you really don't want the chicks she's sitting on, I personally would remove the eggs from the nest now and bring her inside. Run a Craigslist ad or something to find her a new home that wants a broody to raise chicks. If you decide to keep her, I don't think you can easily integrate her...

    Rooster stop crowing

Without a coop, I don't see how the chicken heaters will be able to warm anything outdoors. I think the first priority would be to make or purchase an enclosed shelter, and a perch off the ground, where they can sit and cover their feet to keep them from freezing.

    Coop Cam

Caught this on our wireless chicken cam today...hubs left the door unlatched momentarily while chicken rustling this morning..and this happened immediately!

    Where did they come from???

A raccoon raided our urban chicken run, and sent them flying everywhere. We found one 3 days later in a tree a block away from home, being fed by a friendly neighbor, after we had given her up for dead. She has lots of missing and broken feathers, but no broken skin! Dupel is still very freaked...

What do we have?? The Older Birds

She can't be a cochin-her legs aren't feathered and not right body shape. Not that I know what she is, tho! Probably a mixed breed.

    White-legged white 6 week old

Glad to be of assistance. Sure you don't need a leghorn rooster instead?

    White-legged white 6 week old

This was sold by McMurray's as a Columbian Wyandotte pullet. So far, is completely white with white legs, and obviously not a rose comb. Also cherry red comb, wattles and ear lobes already-so what kind of rooster did they sell me?

    Murray McMurray hatchery???????

Here's my three-legged Gold Laced Wyandotte from McMurray's: And here's my "Columbian Wyandotte pullet", same McMurray's order: Yes, they credited the price of these chicks, and the dead ones, but the mailing cost was the real expense, and not refundable. Cannot recommend this hatchery for...

GL Wyandotte chick with extra appendage

Thanks for your interest! The chick seems to be doing pretty well, although she is probably 1/3 smaller than the other Wyandotte. I'm hoping the older hens won't pick on her when it's time to move them in together. I haven't noticed any particular bullying behavior from the other two chicks...

GL Wyandotte chick with extra appendage

My inclination is to do nothing but observe, as well. Very disappointed in McMurray, as this is my only gold-laced Wyandotte. With a small urban flock of 6, I can neither raise my own stock, nor order more. I hope whatever internal issues she might also have won't prevent her from laying, as...

GL Wyandotte chick with extra appendage

This little two week old hatchery chick has what looks like an extra toe extending from it's abdomen, near where the normal right leg is. When I contacted McMurray Hatchery, they say it should not have been shipped, and credited the purchase price, but gave no advice on what to do with her. My...

Do I have another EE pullet, or something else?

She was sold as a sexed pullet. Hope the hatchery is right! Last year bought 2 straight run lavenders that ended up both male, and it broken heart-they were beautiful!

Do I have another EE pullet, or something else?

Thanks, Michael. Always a good start to the day when I learn something new about chickens!

Do I have another EE pullet, or something else?

Thanks for your opinion. Will be fun to watch how she turns out! And I've not had blue/green eggs for a while, so that would be nice also.
