Now that it's getting cold, I bought a plastic dog crate for my girl's open air coop (the shipping crate type with plenty of ventilation). I put it up on blocks about 1.5 ft off the ground and built some roosts to go inside. My girls are about 6.5 months old and have been sleeping on a pile in...
That's great! Nothing worse than coming back from a vacation to find animals not taken care of. We just got our girls this year and I've been wondering what we would do if/when we go out of town so that's great to hear
Thanks again for all the advice. I live in an unincorporated area, so not quite city, not quite county. I couldn't find any hard and fast rules about chickens in my area so I'm sure if someone complained it could be an issue. Also, like Franko said, I just don't want to infringe on other's. I...
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately her window is only about 20 feet away from the coop door and it's up high (my coop is at her basement level) so I don't think there would be a way to plant any sort of sound barrier. When I shut the one side of the door last night it did keep the coop quite...
For some reason my hens are much noisier than I remembered as a child. They are up at the very first crack of dawn and their egg song is very LOUD, but they usually quiet down within a few hours and are pretty much slient for the rest of the day. It doesn't bother me at all and I wouldn't be as...
I have 5 young girls and I've had one of them laying for about a week now... perfect little white eggs. Then yesterday, I have my usual perfect egg in the nest ... and two shell-less eggs just randomly about. The membrane was so thin, I couldn't have picked them up if I tried, so I scooped them...
There is a pretty big difference. Shavings are a lot messier and more difficult if you want to keep them in a contained area. Pellets make less of a mess. When they get wet, they just turn to saw dust. Shavings, on the other hand, are probably more "comfortable" for the chickens. I guess it...
UPDATE- It is definitly the leghorn laying. Caught her yesterday around noon. My husband and I had the window open and were chuckling at all her squacking. I peeked outside and saw her in the nesting box. About 20 minutes later there was a surpirse waiting She has layed 3 eggs total now, all...
Silkies are greatest! My sister and I had one when we were little (Henrietta). She used to ride around with us on our handle bars. She was the best chicken!
Thanks everyone!
JulieNKC, I actually thought the leghorn would lay first. Her comb is the biggest and brightest of all the girls. Maybe I just wanted it to be my little Violet (she's my favorite)... Guess we'll have to wait and see!!!
So glad to see I'm not the only one that gets excited...
I'm so excited, and had to share the news. We got our first egg last night! It was a perfect little white egg. Either from my silver spangled hamburg or white leghorn (our other 3 girls should lay brown eggs). I'm guessing it was the spangled due to the size. Wish I could post pics but I'm new...
Ok, I really want to add pics of my new Naked Neck pullets, but this is my first post and I can't for the life of me figure out how to add pics on here...so frustrating
