So glad the mums are caring for their wee charges - they will keep the chicks warm, I have had chicks this time of year here.
Right now I have a hen sitting on 2 eggs - it will be very cold when those babies hatch in about 10 days. Likely have some snow by then, but mama will keep them warm...
Agreed - the hens should be protected from the rest of the flock, I do keep my broody mums in the nest box they choose, but I screen it off so that the rest can’t mess with her and the chicks.
My 6 month old silkie hatched out 4 eggs in Oct, 2 eggs from older 2 yr old hens, 2 eggs from 6 month old hens. The chicks r 11 weeks this week.
I don't think age affects eggs too much, as long as they are fertile they should hatch!
You laugh (hahaha) but chick poop is gross !!! I am sure my horses aren't thrilled when they get some of those juicier nuggets :)
But they sure are cute all cuddled up there - mum on the look out like a good mama.
I took my gal off once a day because she was very young (had only started laying eggs a month or so earlier) and first time. Also I only had 4 eggs under her. It all went splendidly and I now have 4, 6-week old crazy chickies running around! pooping on hay.... getting in my office.... :)
I was so paranoid my broody silkie Cochin X would pull a runner like that so I kept her sister broody as well as a backup 😆
But she behaved and hatched all 4, they r 6 weeks this Thursday.
One thing I did was to get her off the nest daily for about 15 min each day to eat and poop. She wouldn't...
Sounds awesome! Well make sure u keep us posted with your egg journey 😄 I look forward to seeing your success.
This is Henny Penny and her 4 chicks - at 5 weeks they nearly fit under her!
