As I headed to the coop this morning I was greeted by my bantam Cochin lil Dude's crow/screaming goat sound. He's super chill and I haven't heard him crow in a couple weeks. Then it was followed by the most beautiful, low-toned crow!
I peeked into the coop and waited...
Lil Dude goat-crowed...
Oh that is precious! Good looking' dog--is it a white GSD?
Ha! I had a Nugget (and a PotPie), they were my Partridge Rock roosters. They now live on a farm watching over 2dozen ladies.
These Orps have me in stitches most of the time! Such sweet silly birds. I went out to find my tiny runt Olive hanging off my male Bullmastiff's muzzle--she grabbed him and wouldn't let go and my poor dog was looking terrified at me like "What IS this lil monstrous thing?!" Both Olive and...
I just needed to be patient; coop check & headcount tonight showed 10 of 11 roosting :)
I knew Orps were docile and sweet, but I was getting worried I had to add "bless their hearts" after mentioning them, but you were right Hennible, they figured it out! ;)
Thanks for the quick reply!
I was just worried because they are so darn fluffy and with 8 of them piled on top of each other, some are are getting a bit poopy feathered.
At least the coop is big enough that they can sleep on the other side and not be near the roosts and get bombed from above! lol
So my chicks had a roost in their brooder that they used, and when they were 8wks old I moved them into an expen in the coop that had a perch as well. Now that they are 10wks old and mingling with the big girls, they don't use the roosts in the coop. Instead they have been clumping in a corner...
Thanks for the pic examples HighStreetCoop and thanks for the input Hennible!
Well, that means 4 of 11 are cockerels. Not bad!
I also have a Lavender and a Black out of this batch of chicks. I think the Jubilees and Lavender will be the ones seeking new homes. My Black one, Alistair, is huge...
Anyone up for guessing Cockeral or Pullet?
My English Orp chicks are 9wks old tomorrow and my Lavenders and Blacks are clearly distinguishable, but my Jubilees are giving me some trouble. Or maybe I'm just in denial and don't want to admit I have any cockerals! ;)
These are from Papa's Poultry...
Oh how funny! I know what you mean about ugly though-- half my chicks are just the homeliest lil things and I don't want to share pics in case someone asks why they're half-bald! lol
On your signature I see it says you own Mastiffs!
In addition to being a card carrying member of the Crazy...
I feel like the different colors of my chicks are feathering in at different rates.
The Lavender and Chocolates are pretty much tiny proper chickens with full feathers.
The Jubilees and Blacks still look like Skeksis!
They are 7wks old today and still in my formal living room. I'm getting...
I'm moving my little feathered piglets into a wardrobe box this weekend. The pumpkin box is a fabulous idea! Did your new coop arrive alright? I moved my older girls into the new coop this week and finished the run. I grossly underestimated how long it would take me to finish their run!
The...
Oh! So we've got chicken sisters! lol
They are so adorable! <3
I just switched their brooder bedding to sand. It's a bit late, but i had trouble finding DRY bags of sand here in the Seattle area. They are making a huge mess dust bathing and flinging it all over the "formal" living room! :D
In...
Awesome! I was so impressed with Jeff on so many levels; lineage info, health, support, and his customer service was outstanding. Not to mention these chicks arrived safe and healthy and are doing great!
How old are yours??? Do you have pics? Mine will be 3wks on the 4th. I hope to add Blues...
Just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello!
This past Spring I got my first ever chickens--4 chicks from the feedstore. I quickly fell in love and started doing more breed research and became smitten with the English Orpington.
There are currently 11 brooding in my living room and they...
