Help Illinois. I was given a single 2 day old chick today, does anyone have any chicks available right now? I do not care what breed, just need a buddy, female preferred. I can come and pick up tomorrow. I am located in Chicago suburbs, willing to travel up to 3hrs out.
I had two polish roos over the winter, one did fine, he was the dominant one, and was able to roost between hens. The other one was left to roost solo and ended up with frostbite on his feet. My neighbor has a polish hen, she does fine, but is in a coop with other cold hardy breeds.
I personally will be avoiding Rural King in the future. I have gotten a total of 7 chicks from them in the past 2 years. 6 out of 7 have turned out to be roosters. One I got this year was supposed to be a leghorn pullet, but is a really a Cornish cockrel. And yes, they were all from the "sexed"...
The large hawks are female red tails. The females tend to be larger then males, they are ramping up their food intake so that they are nice and plump for nesting in the next month.
Mine love to eat snow. They do not get any supplemental heat, and that includes water. I bring out fresh water twice a day, and leave a container of snow in their coop overnight in case anyone gets a bit thirsty. Many times they ignore the water and just eat the snow.
I just gave my rooster with a mite infestation a bath and blow dry last night. After he was all dried off he was sent back out to the coop for the night. I would guess it was a 30-40 degree difference between the house and the coop. He was just fine this morning.
I also throw a flake of alfalfa hay from the horses stash in the coop each week. They like to snuggle down into it to keep warm, and pick thru it to eat. It usually takes a week for them to finish the flake.
Mine don't have too much trouble with the snow. They will walk in it without a problem. They love to eat it. One thing with snow is making sure they can get up out of it every so often so they can roost and warm their feet against their bodies. I throw lots of lettuce and greens in the snow so...
I agree with KFacres. Chickens are really easy and pretty hardy. Here are some pictures of my set up. Coop and run are on the South side of my garage.
They get no heated water bowls, no light bulbs, the vents on the short ends of the coop are covered in screen only, and I leave the door...
My cat will usually kill anything that moves. That being said, he couldn't care less about my chickens. My expiriences with cats and chickens has been that a resonably fed cat will normally not go after an adult bird. Chicks and teenage birds possibly, but not the adults. They are probably...
Hello everyone. I have 3 roosters that are looking for new homes. All are 4 months old. I have a silver laced polish, a golden laced polish, and an Easter Egger bantam. Located in Chicagoland.
