    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

These are Bato's 5, pictures back from July. I need to get pics of Kali's 3 but those ones are not tame at all (they lived in the main coop from the beginning, while Bato's were put in the little broody coop and got much more handling). Bato's chicks are the most tame I have ever seen. I can...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

I need to upload the photos of mine. Tentatively out of 8 chicks I think I have 6 pullets (maybe some slow developer will surprise me though) so it's a good result this year. Bato weaned her chicks after about 4 weeks and just went back to the main coop and now ignores them, while Kali is still...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

I did this but once they went outside to the run they were still really skittish. Not sure why. Maybe it's that in a brooder you are having to reach in for them which they don't really like vs them being outside where you can sit down and they can approach you instead. I have definitely been...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

Anyone else finding that their broody-raised chicks are a lot friendlier than chicks raised in the brooder? They seem a lot less afraid and more interested in checking out new things. I have one that will fly onto my shoulder any time it sees me, whenever I've raised brooder chicks it was a...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

I think Bato has weaned her chicks. 2nd night in a row she went into the main coop and the little ones stay on their own. I think they are big enough to stay warm now though. Time goes so fast!

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

Had to do a little rescue this morning - one of the eggs was zipped all the way around and down one side but still couldn't get out because the inner membrane was attached in small parts. Dry fluffy chick inside very happy to be out. All three hatched now and seem well!

best pic I could get after fishing under mamma hen. I don't think any others hatched yet. Must be very young cause it's a bit sleepy still. The others in the little coop are growing fast. I think the one in this pic is a boy though :C

I checked on my other broody in the coop today and heard a chirping. Was starting to be convinced that she was sitting on duds. Chick pics to follow :)

...WHY though? Isn't the whole point of getting eggs hatched under a broody that the broody will raise the chicks so you don't have to? Hatching eggs under an incubator is far simpler and full-proof with the same result. It makes no sense. I would agree that it is cruel too. 3 weeks of sitting...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

yeah she has lots of random speckles of different colour that make her look permanently dirty. she's slightly grey-white even if she's had a bath. some of her feathers have a silvery-brown outline. and lots of black speckles on white feathers. nothing like the actual pattern of a light sussex...

    Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

She's either a white leghorn or a white star. Not sure really, she was a rescue from a farm where I basically got told to go into the pen and pick whatever chickens I wanted and put them in a box, lol. Most of them were isa browns but I was determined to grab a white one even though she was the...
