Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have different roo to hen ratios depending on the type of chicken. I have 2 groups of bantams and 1 larger group of layers. In one bantam group, 1 roo is with 3 hens. In another bantam group, 1 roo is with four hens. As for the layers, I try to keep at least 8 hens to 1 roo, which is what I...

I used a 65 watt bulb on a drop light for 7 chicks this past spring when my broody became seriously ill and I had to take the eggs from her on day 20. It worked great. After they grew a bit and didn't need as much heat, I changed the bulb to a 40 watt. Super easy. Those chicks have grown into...

Thank you for sharing the video. It brought tears to my eyes but I'm glad to be informed. I've often wanted to start a chicken house business. If I were to, the chickens would be rotated on a field in front of each house and a field behind each house to free range on during the day and would...

As to Bee's question about what advice we have implemented and found effective..The best thing I've ever done for my chickens was to add more ventilation in the coop after reading about how important it is here. Before I added more ventilation, the poop under the roosts stayed wet and the air...

I'm not raising the meal worms because I expect them to dramatically cut back on feed costs, though I'm sure they will help somewhat. I want them mainly for the protein and health benefits they will have on my chickens this winter when there aren't many insects out and about. I chose meal worms...

I got the wasp nest sprayed. Thanks for the advice on how to handle the wasps everyone. Do any of you old timers raise meal worms or such for your chickens? I just got an order of 1000 meal worms in today and have them situated in a tank. I'm hoping to raise the meal worms to feed to the...

Bug bombs sound awesome! I'm a bit of a chicken myself, or at least I am now after getting stung twice. Do you know if the bombs would still be effective in a well ventilated coop? I suppose I could wrap the coop in plastic if we still have some left in the garage if need be.

I would be wary of eating the eggs immediately after deworming. Our eggs always look a little off during and after de-worming the chickens (which I am working hard to avoid doing again). There are noticeable blood spots in the eggs and a very liquid-like consistancy to them. The membranes are...

Thanks for the advice on how to handle the red wasps everyone. Having no former experience with red wasps, I definitely appreciate it. I will get some wasp spray, watch and find the nest(s), layer up, put on a boonie hat, and spray the nest at night as has been suggested.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Well, I have a disaster that I need advice on. My bantam house has been taken over by red wasps. I've been stung twice with the last sting being worse than the first. My neck is so swore from the sting I can hardly move it. I don't know what to do about the wasps. I can't see where the nest is...

I'm not sure what's up with your hen. However, when one of my hens starts going into the nesting box and not laying an egg, I get concerned. Most of the hens that have done that here in the past have ended up with an egg broke inside them. I had this happen about a month and a half ago with one...

Looks good. All of my future runs are going to be hoops. I like them much more than rectangular runs.

I had coryza in one of my first flocks after I made the mistake of buying from a not so reliable breeder. I medicated the chickens and I have never regretted it. The carriers never infected any other birds. I've still got one easter egger that had infectious coryza, and as I said, she has never...

I clearly said that it works for me to keep predators out, not that it will work for anyone else. If people want to take this as fact and believe that it will work for everyone, that is of their own ignorance. Not mine.

True, but the chicken wire on the main pen has been holding up and working well for 7 years, so I have no reason to suspect that it will not continue to work.

I think we must have different wire. A strong man (my dad) can not pull my chicken wire apart. I can't either but I'm not the strongest person ever so that's not saying much. I'm just guessing here, but if a strong man can not pull the wire apart I don't think a coon can either.
