Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Well, Its been a while, but as the story of these two ended today I figured I would update. I've seen other members mention that posters rarely post results, so here are mine: Dasiy (the severely underweight BO mix) was doing wonderfully. She gained weight, FINALLY stopped sneezing, and was...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Update: All's well (enough) Nay is a fighter, I'll give her that. We got through the blockage and she seems to be feeling really good. She's still having to really put some effort into pooping, which leads me to believe there is more lash build-up in there disrupting things. There was a morning...

Does that work the same way as an egg blockage? As in, she can't poop until its out? Do you think this is a result of the antibiotics? A sign that they are working, or a sign that its a whole lot worse than I knew? I really hate the thought of loosing her now after all we've been through.

Yeah, its Nay. I took action this afternoon before I saw your post. I gave her a long epsom salt soak and cleaned off her vent. I found some definite lash material. It was a solid chunk about the size of the end of my pinky finger at the last joint. Solid layered lash and totally clean this time...

Ok, need help. I think I have an egg bound situation. Tight, swollen abdomen, drizzling a little fluid from the vent occasionally. Listless, and just standing around trance-like. I'm researching how to handle the situation, but some first-hand advice would be greatly appreciated!

In regard to all the other Tylan threads: How can there be so many recommendations for lower doses? Are these folks really seeing results at such low doses?

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Exactly. Tried to play it safe for the first dose, but can up the dosage going forward after confirmation. Thank you for responding. :)

Update: Gaining weight, starting antibiotics. I've been really busy these past few weeks, and just keeping an eye on the girls. I finally made it to TS today and picked up some Tylan50 injectable. I did another weigh-in today to prepare for meds and these ladies have put on some weight! Nay is...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Kind of. But it's never mixed in with the poop. It's always on the outside, between the skin and any waste buildup. It seems more like some kind of buildup in the cloaca itself (why I've been holding out hope) Also, the skin underneath is usually VERY raw. Could this be actual skin or diseased...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

I gave Nay Nay another soak today and got a little more "material" out (gross images to follow). This stuff is really strange, it's like it's a coating on top of her skin inside and just around the edge of the vent. The thick tarry poop sticks to it, builds up, and when the hardened poop is...

Update and Antibiotic advice The ladies are all looking pretty good! They had their first free range time today for a couple of hours and loved it. They both came right back to the coop for me at dusk. I guess they have decided this place isn't so bad and they will stay. :) Nay had to have...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Update: Everyone is looking pretty good. Day two of second round of dewormer (exact dose, given in a Tbsp of baby oatmeal) I'm starting to wonder if that first round really did anything at all. After dosing like this the water method really doesn't make any sense... 3ml/gal for two chickens who...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

I held off on dosing this today. 15ml just doesn't sound like enough for a full course. The poultry DVM site makes no mention (that I saw) of how long to administer. Looking through threads now.

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

I got weights on everyone today! Red: 6.44 Nay: 5.24 Daisy: 2.5 They were all a little wet (rainy day here) but that shouldn't make too much difference. I'm going to do an exact dose for the sick girls. I didn't worm Red the first time around, but considering it now. Thoughts? Also, having a...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Well that sure doesn't sound good. Definitely adds up to what I'm seeing though. Okay... I have an unmixed bottle of clavamox in my arsenal. Since this is sounding more and more to be bacterial, what do you think? (thank goodness it's unmixed, I know it has a really short shelf life once mixed...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Update (GRAPHIC/GROSS PICS BELOW!!): Busy Day! Got a good look at the ladies this morning, starting with healthy girl Red. (Holy cow what a difference between her and these sick girls!) Crops empty and abdomens relatively firm, feet look good. Its just heartbreaking how skinny they are...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Thanks everyone for the replies. Well, the girls are looking a little livelier today! I think they are enjoying being outside in the fresh air. I tried to get some pics, but none really came out. I did a vent check on both: Nay Nay looks to be in need of another soak. Not the crazy...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Thanks for the reply Cragg. (And the links!) Crop function was something that was not really on my radar. I checked Daisy yesterday afternoon and it really felt like there wasn't a whole lot in there. She's still not roosting on a perch (nesting in a little hay box I've provided for her...

Rookie Move: Brought home sick chickens

Hi everyone, So I'm new to the forum, but have been using it as a resource since I brought home our first chicks almost two years ago. I found myself with only one chicken earlier this month. We've had a free ranging RIR and turkey pair that have done splendidly for the past year. They were...
