It's sad to see how some people don't think of simple things like that and it causes needless suffering. I once had a cat with a bald ring around his neck because someone put a collar on him as a kitten and never let it out as he grew. I wound up embedding itself in his fur and left a scar all...
Whoever had them should have checked their feet out periodically and clipped their talons. Even if they free range it's a good idea to check them out for infection, or sometimes they have a twisted toe that doesn't wear down like the others and can twist around.
No problem. It would be really nice if you could autosex them, because they're notoriously difficult to tell apart. I had a pullet that I was convinced was a roo every other day until she finally lay an egg! ;)
If you have a garden you can "feed" the egg to a tomato plant by cracking it into the hole you're going to plant it in. Tomatoes love the calcium, and I doubt the extra protien would hurt either.
My two pullets had different tail feathers and one got much redder than the other at a much younger age. Turns out they were both pullets even though the red wattles worried me.
It depends on what breed of LSG you get, but usually they're supposed to be independent thinkers who can be left on their own to do their thing. I was reading a blog of a woman who raises sheep and her experiences with getting a LSG (Great Pyrenees) and once adjusted she vecame indespensible...
Pretty much any dog can be goaded intobkilling when it has another dog with it, "pack mentality" takes over especially with fluttery squeaky soft toy-like things like chickens.
That's excellent news! The first night is the worst with wounds, now that they've got foid and painkillers in them their chances are much better. Good for you on taking such good care of your survivors.
That does sound like raccoons, and it's hard not to blame yourself but you're human and make mistakes. I know I've jumped up because I realized that I left the pop door open past dusk more than once.
My wounded girl didn't want to drink or eat for a while either. When I used the eyedropper...
Good luck saving her! Shock is the most immedite threat to her if she isn't currently bleeding. If you haven't dealt with this before, put her somewhere warm, quiet, and dim. When my Black Australorp survived a dog mauling, I treated her wounds with blu-kote and non-medicated neosporin and...
Oh no tht's horrible! So sorry to hear that happened. Is their coop enclosed by a pen or just open to your yard? Any ideas on what killed them? I'm glad you have your brooder chicks although I realize that's cold comfort.
I for one am interested in your input, Big Medecine. Just because this is for non-show Brahmas doesn't mean we're not interested in genetics and improving what stock we have. :)
It could be a couple of things, either waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back there was a straight comb somewhere in the line (not knocking your birds, but Brahmas weren't always Brahmas, at one point they were a "mixed breed" and that comb has just been hidden all this time, or it's a spontaneous...
