I have been operating a professional bee removal service in Kansas for the last fifteen years. Most of it is enjoyable, some is agonizing, but we get paid well.

We can't buy a bloom around here. The elms just started opening up last week, it snowed all afternoon the other day, it is 55 today and the wind is 35 to 40 mph. Love springtime but the transition getting there is frustrating.

Good on ya! Most people do not understand the importance of studying and gaining the knowledge BEFORE jumping into beekeeping, it makes the venture much more enjoyable and the likelihood of failure more remote.

The people on this thread need to stop prescribing epi-pens. ~~Yes. While you may be fine and recover, it can also cause arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) and cardiovascular collapse. Epi Pens are lifesaving for those in anaphylaxis/shock, who will die without it. But they can also be deadly...

There are a lot of different designs when it comes to observation hives. Display cases can have a hole in them but usually when you find a exit/entrance it is meant for long term usage and set up with a hose that can either lead to the outside or the whole thing left outside, those models...

Go to any Lowes, Menards, etc. and in the paint department they will have 'Opps' paint. It is usually paint that was not colored right and sells for $5. gal. Buy only exterior paint, I prefer gloss or semi gloss and I always primed the wood first to keep the final coat from peeling. I no...

You made a good choice in the eight frame medium hive, much better than a TBH in my opinion. If you only wanted to keep some pollinators around and not make honey TBH are fine but if your interest is in honey production Langs are the way to go. TBHs can be fun to play with but they present...

An epi-pen can be a dangerous tool if not really needed. I used to carry one incase someone went into shock while I was doing bee removals. My doctor made sure that I knew that the person would be in a dire situation before using it and my insurance agent made sure that I stopped carrying one...

They say that one out of a hundred people are allergic to honey bees to the point that one sting will make them go into anaphylactic shock. That is when the airway closes up and makes breathing difficult to the point of suffocation. Not every stinging insect has the same venom and there are...

Two things could be holding it up, first is the burr comb but I don't think that is the problem, there would not be burr comb unless thee was a lot of space up there. In the first picture, all the way to the left on the end there is a board that sticks up above the top bars. It appears to me...

Bees should not be able to get above the bars on a top bar hive. Can you post us a picture of you TBH? Sounds like it was not made correctly.

Congratulations to all of you taking classes! And being wise enough to realize that learning the basics and having your equipment ready BEFORE getting your bees is the right thing to do. Frustration is the number one cause of beekeepers failing and leaving beekeeping. We are getting ready...

That sounds like a queen mating nuc. It is a very small box with only three to five frames and intended to hold about a cup of bees to care for an emerging queen. The queen will go on mating flights and when it has started to lay she will be removed and sold or used in a full size hive. The...
