This is so interesting. I read recently that you should put the lights on from 1-3am in the south to give them extra time to eat in the cooler evening temperature.
It looks like I'm going to have a bunch hatch the first part of June. Two broody's with Seven or so plus 30 or so in the incubator.
Woops! I waited too long and my Blosl White Rock has appropriated the Sussex's eggs. Now I have to get another nest going and move them both to the 12' X 12' coop that I'm readying for the 12 day olds in the storeroom. It's going to be my broody house. Maybe I can slip some of the 'bator...
You know, I think that the upcoming climate change or whatever is going to do a number on our birds. It could become the norm for all new layers to be late. I think that I'll wait it out for a year or so to tell what is what. Mine are so late now and they are too good to cull.
That's funny. Beekissed was griping about her's last winter and decided that all the expectations of early laying were going to be off for the extreme winter. And we are having one just as severe this year. My Blosl and XW white rocks are almost 8 months old and not laying. The one...
You are so correct, Bee, I got some rescue chickens from a hatchery and the first few eggs were pale and lemon colored. After a week or so on fermented feed they started turning bright orange. The chickens themselves are healthier and robust.
Sorry for the delayed answer. That's a great set of choices. I plan to go for White Rocks, NH, and Australorps. Along with the Basques of course. I have a Blosl rooster white rock I'm picking up locally Sat. And one Blosl pullet and 2XW pullets. This is my main breed. Others will be for...
Yeah, the problem with the Basques is that they all came from one bunch of imported birds to Canada. EVERYTHING after that is all from the one import. However, one lady Meg went to Spain and brought back eggs to hatch and has some very good colors. This is who I want to get in my flock.
I haven't even made a guess yet on male or female. Leaning toward male. BUT no spots and just a little brown around the hackles. I'm thinking mutts. Dark legs. But they are definitely shaped like Rocks.
Just from my reading. I read that the Dorkings did not handle heat nearly as well as cold. I have humid heat in summer and made the decision to get Rocks. I don't know where I read that. I have done so much reading I couldn't even manage a guess. Sorry
I notice that you are in Arizona. I live in north Louisiana and it's hot in summer. I considered White Dorkings for a while and changed my mind. I don't believer they can handle the heat as well as the White Rocks. Also, there is a wonderful thread on here about the Marraduna Basques. Heat...
Very good job!!! I hatched two eggs and the chicks turned out to look like this. I ordered white rocks and told him about it. He said they were barred rocks. But they are still black. Are they mutts?
