You will LOVE the PDZ. It's kind of a sandy-type material. They use it in horse stalls to cut the odor. It's safe for chickens and OK for composting when you scoop the poop out. (It sticks to the poo). You can get it at most farm stores like Southern States or Tractor Supply Company - probably...
I wonder if you could make the poo board inaccessible to them during the day? Maybe put a slanted board toward the wall so they can't get up there at all? (Or whatever else you may come up with.) Then they CAN'T lay in there and may discover the benefits of a nice, private nest!
I find that most everything is overpriced!
I also find that chickens can be expensive - even if you don't buy the overpriced stuff!
When does anyone start making a little profit?!
I'm far from knowing all this stuff, but I might add my thoughts anyway! Considering that 1 adult hen/rooster may be up to 15 inches from beak to bum when roosting - and you have 2 roosts, one above the other - wouldn't you want to make the poop board a little wider, like say 32-36" so that the...
I do this, too, but just once every 1-2 weeks to "fine-clean" the poo-board. Otherwise, the kitty litter scoop is fine. The strainer gets all the little pieces and the PDZ looks like it just came out of the bag when you're done straining.
Thanks! I would like to paint it red w/ white trim, but that won't happen very soon. $$$$. I'm sure the chickens don't mind, though! I was concerned that it might not be big enough for the 16 critters, especially come winter and rains when they go inside. But maybe by then we'll be able to...
We live too close to the road - even though it's a dead-end in the country - to keep cats. Have tried and I love them, but they always get hit. Can't keep them in the house. So we keep a wire one close by! Wish we could borrow your tom - does he catch moles??!! He would have a FEAST in our...
I had wondered about kitty litter - I don't actually use it. I'm glad someone responded in answer to my question about it! If it's bad for them, I sure won't be using it at anytime! Thanks!!
Thanks! I put (1) 40 lb bag in a trough almost 6' long x 2' wide, so I guess that is plenty deep. First night with it in there and they all aimed pretty good. Not much on the floor!
The PDZ that this thread is talking about, is it what is called "stall refresher" or "stall refresher granules"? Here is a link that shows what I found at Southern States. It seems to be the only place around here that sells it...
Day 19 Chicken Parents so we're pretty new to this! I love your coop!
How much poop in the coop is too much? How often should I be cleaning a 6'x6' coop that has a treated wood floor (it was a playhouse when the kids were little) These 36 square feet house 15 chickens and 1 rooster, mostly...
