Poor thing... Looks like it was malposition - head trapped under it's legs. Yolk wasn't fully absorbed but veins were receded. Already dead by the time I cracked into it.
So, everyone else hatched out on Monday, but one egg is running behind. It's Thursday here now and running on day 25 for this lil bitty. Is it eggtopsy\assisted hatch time, or should I give it another day? I have no idea whether it's still viable at this stage.
Mom is still sitting as of this...
We're in NZ, so a bit ahead. Today is the 23rd and she started early evening of the first. She was definitely bored. Had fun worrying one of my rings and was very curious of my cup of tea. I sat with her for a few hours offering heaps of pats. Clearly, she's not the type of broody to be grumpy...
Goodness if I ever make it through this hatch...
Did a proper candle last time she kicked most the nest and there was definite movement in at least 2 out of the 3 she booted.
Humidity's been high lately so did a sneaky candle yesterday evening on the nest and they look very close to popping...
I decided not to touch her for lockdown and I think she did it while getting up to relieve herself... She has them all under her at the moment, but not sure if they're alive. No noises coming from them and couldn't see any movement. I've made them hard for her to kick out with a soft xs pet bed...
Maybe the looming motherhood is getting to her.. came back from an outing to find 3 out of 4 knocked out this time as she'd gotten up to go toilet She's still sitting one .. the other three haven't cooled all the way yet. It's her first time hatching so maybe that's to blame.
Don't know what...
Oh my... my broody kicked an egg out today. I've popped it back under, but it was cold so expecting that one to be a loss now - was one of the Dorkings :(
We're on day 19\20ish - my broody's put herself in lockdown. She was chatting up the eggs this morning, but was quiet when I checked in on...
Hey guys,
Everybody's alive so far, but one of the eggs - an oblong shape - has a very large air cell compared to everyone else. Is this one doomed to be shrink wrapped? Outdoor humidity here is high - in the mid 70's and my broody has been managing the hatch so far. All the other eggs have...
Hey guys, quick lockdown question... I have a very dedicated broody - should I still pull her off the nest for toileting or just leave her alone when we get to day 18? Sorry for the lack of pics but I haven't wanted to risk weather and candling and camera, but all four look alive so far.
To my understanding, it's because of all the rattling around during shipment can damage tissues anchoring the air sack.On the extreme end, the air sack can become disconnected and move freely within the shell. Not turning them for a few days gives the eggs a chance to repair that damage - hence...
Much better than 8-9 hours... I've heard momma hen can be off the nest for that long and since it's in a styro incubator, I wouldn't suspect it would lose heat that quickly during the card ride. I am
White is better for sterilization; save back some apple cider vinegar to add to their water -...
When I brooded my first bunch bought as chicks, I used a 6 panel pet pen and strapped it in cardboard corrugate with plastic mat and astroturf underneath. The hoops on the top are perfect for fitting bird mesh over snugly to keep the little ones in. Those panels are the best; I've used them to...
Looks like it's going to be a few days before I can get some candling pics... it's suddenly turned very rainy here and I don't want to risk them getting wet. I did have a peek at 4 days and saw action in at least 3 of 4.
And my broody 'knows'... as soon as I gave her the eggs she knew something...
Joining in the Hatch-a-Long too! I've just popped two SL Wynadotte and two Dorking eggs under my puffed up soon-to-be first time mum Silkie! Will post candling picks on the weekend XD
