    Bielefelder thread!!!!

I love that you did that! I'm betting my flock either will treat it like lava (par for the course) or eat it's face off in a spectacular attack. My boy (Spatch) will probably just crow at it. I'll have to wait for warmer temps in order for the snow to pack but I will def take some pics.

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

I only have two Bielefelders left, one male and female, but they both treat the snow outside like lava. I do make snowballs for them in the run and they love that. I wonder what they would do to a mini snowman? Maybe I'll make one and do a photo series.

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

I have wanted to cross Bielefelder with one of my Lemon Cuckoo Niederrhieners for a while. I have one chick that hatched yesterday, and one more in the incubator, plus a pure Biel in bator from a hen with rich dark eggs. No white spot but the grey ring around neck is odd. Looks similar to the...

Here’s a pic of my cockerel in the foreground-note the comb, lt color around eyes and head, notable barring. Compare to the pullet in the back right with lighter eye markings and plumage, but without notable barring and a very small comb. Mind you, these are hatchery birds.

Def looks off and comb is big for a Biel pullet. Do you know what the mystery chick was? Here’s a pic of mine at 5 weeks (perched on my legs): male, 2 females.

He came from McMurrays. He’s a very good roo, but lately he likes to go after my shoes- they’re new runners and have a reflective marking but better than sandals around him..lol

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

cute! That’s a cluck. My girls do the same and give a good back and forth cluck-cluck-cluck conversation when I go out to see them early mornings.

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

Daphne, 7.5 month old laid second soft shell egg in a week. It was broken in a nest with 3 other eggs. After a nice dose of calcium citrate she expelled some clear watery poo so she earned a night in the ICU, aka the Chick-U, complete with en suite and kitchenette. She is turning her back on me...

x2 on preordering. Bielefelder is a hot breed right now. @Sally PB they should do OK by mail anytime in March in your region. The biels are pretty hardy chicks. I am so excited for you to get them!!

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

Yes!! LCN have very thick, pink-white legs and chunky squatty toes! Frankenfoot !! My LCN hens combs are a bit larger than biels of the same age; must be the angle of the pic. my oldest LCN hen has frostbite on all tips but biels are spared. Mine came from McMurrays. I was happy with them. Not...

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

Niederrheiners, available as Lemon cuckoo Niederrhieners, is a dual purpose, cold hardy docile breed. Auto sexing but difficult to distinguish until a week or so old. They grow much MUCH faster than Bielefelders throughout the first year, and pullets come into lay about 2-4 weeks earlier. I...

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

I would like to give hatching a try eventually but I have too much going with establishing my tree farm on ATM . I need to purchase an incubator first, but ideally I would let a broody hatch. I don’t know that Bielefelders or Niederrhieners go broody, so having an incubator backup is important...

Two fertile eggs, one being very obvious. These eggs are from brahma and bielefelder.

    Bielefelder thread!!!!

My roo is very gentle on the ladies and attentive when free ranging. I haven’t seen him defend against predators, but when he alerts to the flock all freeze in place until he moves first. He does respond to the egg songs and escorts the ladies to and from nests. I have 9 hens to 1 roo and this...
