Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Happy New Year! Looks like this thread has been very quiet. Anyone planning on hatching some Wheatens this spring? I'm looking forward to having eggs in the incubator soon

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I posted, but now I'm in a bind so I'm hoping someone here can help. A raccoon killed my Wheaten Marans cock so I'm looking for a replacement. I'm in the vicinity of Richmond, VA. If anyone has hatching eggs, what might you charge for them? That's my...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hey folks! My wheatens have all battened down for the winter and I'm getting no eggs. I didn't hatch any this past summer as planned so this spring I've got to. I've only get a few to work with and will be looking for some to add. If anyone is in or near Virginia, send me a PM.

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi Folks! Things sure are quiet around here. I've finally got my Wheatens together and am so eager to start hatching in a couple of weeks. A few of my older hens of other breeds have decided to go broody and so I'm thinking I'll run some Wheaten eggs in the incubator and see how things go under...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I think I'm going to set up my Wheaten pen early this year. I have so few that I feel like I'd better hatch some before a catastrophe strikes. Randy, whereabouts in WVa are you?

The spell is broken! One of my Wheatens laid an egg today. :-D Now if those other girls would hurry up I could get over the shame of having to buy eggs at the store a few weeks ago...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

How is everyone faring in the cold, cold blast? My chickens are more mad about being penned up (deer season means there are hounds everywhere) than they are about the cold temperatures. They can see the grass on the other side of the wire and wonder why they can't get to it!

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Well, I've little to report on the Wheaten front. My Wheaten hens are moulting and haven't laid in what seems an eternity. Right when I repenned them in hopes of hatching wheaten chicks they decided to quit for the season. I really don't want to wait all the way 'til spring to hatch anything...

Bangarang, I like your ad. The egg color is awesome and your hen looks lovely. You've got "beautiful" misspelled, though. Fix that and I'm pretty sure people will start throwing money at their computer screens when they see it!

I love the color in your hens. The picture of the hen and chicks is very sweet.

I set and hatched some earlier in the year. My plan is to do some more sometime in late May or early June so that I can avoid having the heat lamps running so much. I'd like the flock to get to spend some time foraging out in the grass as well to get better nutrition going for the sake of more...

I'm thinking I've got two cockerels and one pullet. That or three cockerels! Two are definitely boys. In another week the wing feathers should make it really obvious and then I can say for sure.

And the results are in: 3 of the 4 hatched. I opened the dud and found it must have quit right at about the time I turned off the autoturn cradle on the incubator. The three that hatched are hale and hearty, so I'm content with that. I'd definitely like to get that hen cleared to set more eggs...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Okay, test eggs should hatch over the weekend! I had hoped to be able to set more soon but unfortunately the door to my run got unlocked and some EEs got into the pen where my Wheatens are. Sigh. Now I'll have to wait at least 3 weeks for things to "clear up" before I can collect eggs that have...

5 Marans eggs went into the incubator over the weekend. Here's hoping for a positive test hatch result. I'll let everyone know when I candle.

Time for the test hatch! My hen started back up towards the end of last week and I've set aside three eggs. I plan to start incubating them this Saturday. Neither of my Fitzgerald cockerels got any frostbite but two of my Swedish Flower cockerels did, so I'll be including a few eggs from that...

I guess the cold weather has her holding out on me. She's only laid twice since this post. I guess she decided to call it quits 'til all these polar vortexes are past us!

As they go through the laying cycle the eggs do lighten, but I should think that after the moulting and short-daylight break the eggs would return to the dark end of the spectrum. My older hen has just never laid a particularly dark egg.

Well, on the coldest day in 15 years someone gave me a present bright and early today! Over the weekend I got a heavily spotted egg and it looks like she's worked out her paintbrush this time. The egg from the Fitzgerald pullet is as big as the egg from my Marans hen and it's much darker even...

Happy New Year, everyone! One of my wheaten hens has begun to lay again. Her eggs are probably only a 4 but she's matured nicely and has a tidy comb. I've put my two Fitzgerald cockerels in that pen (there are some EEs and Jersey Giants & JG mixes in that pen, so it will be easy to pick the...
