How is everyone faring in the cold, cold blast? My chickens are more mad about being penned up (deer season means there are hounds everywhere) than they are about the cold temperatures. They can see the grass on the other side of the wire and wonder why they can't get to it!

I set and hatched some earlier in the year. My plan is to do some more sometime in late May or early June so that I can avoid having the heat lamps running so much. I'd like the flock to get to spend some time foraging out in the grass as well to get better nutrition going for the sake of more...

I'm thinking I've got two cockerels and one pullet. That or three cockerels! Two are definitely boys. In another week the wing feathers should make it really obvious and then I can say for sure.

And the results are in: 3 of the 4 hatched. I opened the dud and found it must have quit right at about the time I turned off the autoturn cradle on the incubator. The three that hatched are hale and hearty, so I'm content with that. I'd definitely like to get that hen cleared to set more eggs...

As they go through the laying cycle the eggs do lighten, but I should think that after the moulting and short-daylight break the eggs would return to the dark end of the spectrum. My older hen has just never laid a particularly dark egg.
